ALFA ROMEO B — Body

Sliding door memory locking relay short to positive

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Short circuit in relay control wiring to battery positive
  • Faulty or stuck sliding door memory/locking relay (internally shorted)
  • Corroded or damaged connector at the relay or door harness
  • Pinched or chafed wiring in sliding door harness (door hinge area)
  • Faulty body control module (BCM) or relay driver transistor
  • Aftermarket accessory tied into locking circuit creating a feed to positive

Symptoms

  • Sliding door memory locking/unlocking does not operate or is intermittent
  • Door locks may remain locked or unlocked and not respond to commands
  • Blown fuse(s) on door/lock circuit or repeated fuse failures
  • Battery drain when vehicle is off (rare)
  • Malfunction indicator or body system warning lamp may be present

What to check

  • Read stored freeze-frame and live data with a diagnostic scanner; note related codes
  • Visually inspect relay, relay socket, fuses, and connectors for corrosion, melting, or damage
  • Inspect sliding door harness at hinge/b-pillar for pinching, wear, or exposed conductor
  • With ignition off, disconnect the relay and check for continuity between the control terminal and battery positive
  • With ignition on and code active, measure voltage at relay control pin (expect ~0V inactive, ~battery voltage when driven); look for permanent battery positive
  • Check fuses for the lock/door circuit and replace if blown; retest

Signal parameters

  • Relay control circuit expected: near 0 V (ground/low) when inactive
  • Relay control circuit expected: near battery voltage (11–14 V) when the module commands relay energize
  • A short to positive will show battery voltage present at the control pin regardless of command
  • Continuity between control wire and battery positive with ignition off indicates a short
  • No continuity to chassis ground expected on a control feed unless the module is commanding a ground

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record trouble codes and freeze-frame data. Clear codes and attempt to re‑create the fault to confirm repeatability.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the sliding door harness, door hinge area, relay, relay socket, and associated connectors for damage, corrosion, pinching, or foreign objects.
  3. Remove power to circuit (disconnect battery if needed for safety) and disconnect the relay. Check for continuity between the control terminal and battery positive. If continuity exists, trace wiring to find short to positive.
  4. With a DVOM, measure voltage at the relay control terminal with ignition ON while operating the lock/memory function. If battery voltage is present when the module is not commanding, there is a short to positive or backfeed.
  5. Swap in a known-good relay or bench-test the relay to confirm relay is not internally shorted.
  6. If wiring appears intact, disconnect the sliding door harness connectors progressively to isolate the short location (door side vs. body harness). Test each section for presence of battery positive on the control wire.
  7. Inspect/repair any damaged wiring, replace corroded connectors, or repair pinched sections. Secure harness away from pinch points at hinges.
  8. If wiring and relay are good, test BCM/driver output for shorted transistor. Replace BCM only after confirming wiring and relay are good and module is the only possible cause.
  9. After repair, clear codes, test function repeatedly, and road/operate door cycles to ensure code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Damaged/chafed wire in harness at sliding door hinge (most common)
  • Relay internal short or welded contacts
  • Water intrusion/corrosion at connector causing a positive feed
  • BCM output driver failed shorted to battery

Fault status
