Causes

  • Open or short in microphone signal wiring
  • Corroded or loose microphone connector
  • Failed microphone (electronic element)
  • Poor ground or missing bias/power to microphone
  • Water ingress or physical damage to microphone assembly
  • Faulty audio/voice control module or software issue

Symptoms

  • Voice recognition poor or non‑functional
  • Hands‑free phone calls low volume, distorted or one‑way
  • Intermittent microphone operation (works after wiggle or tap)
  • Related DAS/voice system fault warnings in the instrument cluster or infotainment screen
  • Possible stored additional audio/communication DTCs

What to check

  • Read and record all stored and pending DTCs and freeze frame data
  • Inspect microphone housing and mounting area for water, dirt or damage
  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, or loose terminals
  • Verify fuses and power supplies related to the audio/voice module
  • Backprobe microphone connector: measure bias voltage, continuity and AC audio signal while speaking
  • Wiggle test harness and connector while monitoring signal and noting momentary fault changes

Signal parameters

  • Microphone bias (DC): typically 2.0–5.0 V (varies by manufacturer) — check OEM wiring diagram for exact value
  • AC audio on signal line: roughly 10–1000 mVpp when speaking (depends on microphone and amplifier)
  • Microphone element impedance: typically 1 kΩ–10 kΩ
  • Open circuit: infinite resistance between mic signal and return
  • Short to ground/voltage: near 0 Ω to ground or near vehicle supply voltage

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all stored DTCs and note freeze frame/occurrence conditions. Attempt to reproduce the fault (make a call or use voice command).
  2. Inspect microphone physically and its mounting location for contamination, water ingress or obvious damage. Replace if contaminated or damaged.
  3. Inspect connector and harness for corrosion, damaged pins, or poor retention. Clean and reseat connectors. Repair damaged wires.
  4. With connector disconnected, measure resistance between microphone signal and ground to check for open/short (compare to expected per OEM).
  5. Reconnect and backprobe the microphone signal pin. With ignition/accessory on, verify presence of DC bias voltage on the signal lead per OEM specification.
  6. While speaking into the microphone, observe AC waveform or voltage variation on oscilloscope or high‑sensitivity multimeter. No AC variation suggests open or dead element.
  7. Check continuity from microphone connector to the module connector. Repair any breaks or high resistance joints.
  8. If wiring and connectors test good but signal still abnormal, swap in a known good microphone (if available) or temporarily install a replacement to confirm component failure.
  9. If replacement mic does not clear code, inspect/replace related ground, check module inputs and outputs, and consider module reflash or replacement per dealer service information.
  10. After repair, clear codes and verify system operation and no reoccurrence under normal use.

Likely causes

  • Microphone element failure (most common)
  • Connector corrosion at microphone or module
  • Broken/frayed microphone wiring where harness flexes
  • Microphone bias supply absent due to blown fuse or faulty module
  • PCM/infotainment module intermittent input stage

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Microphone 1 input fault detected — signal out of range, open, shorted, or noisy. The audio/voice control module has flagged the microphone circuit as not meeting expected parameters.
