Causes

  • Open or shorted microphone wiring (broken conductor, chafing, short to ground or battery)
  • Loose, corroded or damaged microphone connector or pins
  • Failed microphone (electret or MEMS element) or internal preamp
  • Poor ground or power supply to microphone circuit
  • Water ingress or contamination in headliner area or microphone assembly
  • Faulty audio/voice control module or connector

Symptoms

  • Hands‑free phone or voice recognition functions work poorly or not at all
  • Low or distorted microphone audio from driver/passenger side
  • System may report ‘microphone fault’ or store related diagnostic trouble codes
  • No obvious audio but no other electrical symptoms
  • Fault may be intermittent (works sometimes)

What to check

  • Scan vehicle for stored/related codes and note freeze frame / occurrence data
  • Visual inspection: microphone(s), headliner, connectors and harness for damage or water
  • Check relevant fuses and grounds for the audio/voice module
  • Inspect connector pins for corrosion, bent pins or contamination
  • Backprobe microphone connector and measure DC bias and signal while speaking
  • Measure continuity and resistance of wiring between microphone and module

Signal parameters

  • Microphone bias voltage (DC) at connector: typically around 2.0–3.3 V (varies by system) — consult factory wiring diagram for exact value
  • Microphone AC output while speaking: small mV to a few hundred mV peak‑to‑peak (depends on microphone type and distance)
  • DC short/open signatures: open circuit or a short to ground/12V will show extreme/zero voltage
  • Module side input impedance: high (measured as several kiloohms) — look for unexpected low resistance to ground or battery

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all stored and pending codes; clear codes and attempt to reproduce to confirm persistence.
  2. Perform visual inspection of microphone location(s), headliner trim, connector(s) and wiring for damage, water or poor routing.
  3. Backprobe the microphone 2 connector with ignition ON (accessory) and measure DC bias voltage at the microphone power/bias pin. Compare to factory spec.
  4. With a second person speaking normally into microphone 2, monitor AC signal at the microphone output (oscilloscope preferred) to confirm presence and quality of audio signal.
  5. Check continuity between the microphone connector and the audio/voice module connector; check for short to ground or battery with ohmmeter (key off).
  6. Inspect and wiggle wiring and connectors while observing live data or listening for changes to reproduce intermittent faults.
  7. If wiring and connectors test good, swap in a known good microphone or bench‑test the suspect microphone to confirm failure.
  8. If microphone and wiring are good, inspect and test the audio/voice module input and grounds; consult manufacturer diagnostics for module bench tests or replacement criteria.
  9. After repair, clear codes and verify repair by re‑checking system operation and that the code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or disconnected microphone 2 wiring/connector (most common)
  • Failed microphone element or internal circuitry
  • Corroded connector or water damage at microphone
  • Fault in hands‑free/audio module input circuit
  • Intermittent wiring fault clipped by harness routing or headliner trim

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Microphone 2 circuit fault detected — open/short/out‑of‑range signal or poor connection detected by the audio/voice control module.
