Causes

  • Open or short in microphone 3 wiring or connector
  • Corroded, loose or damaged microphone connector
  • Failed microphone (element or internal electronics)
  • Water ingress or contamination in microphone or connector
  • Faulty ground or power/bias supply to the microphone
  • Fault in infotainment/voice control module or harness

Symptoms

  • Voice recognition not working or poor performance
  • Hands-free phone callers cannot hear vehicle occupant or audio is very low
  • Static, dropouts, or distorted voice input while using microphone 3
  • One or more voice-related features disabled with related warnings
  • DTC stored in infotainment/telephone module

What to check

  • Read and record all stored codes and freeze frame data with a diagnostic tool
  • Verify vehicle configuration and that microphone 3 is enabled in software
  • Visually inspect microphone 3, its mounting, and wiring for damage, moisture or corrosion
  • Check connector pins for deformation, corrosion or pushed-out terminals
  • Perform wiggle test on harness while monitoring live microphone signal or DTC status
  • Verify fuses and power supply circuits related to the audio/telephone module

Signal parameters

  • Microphone bias voltage (expected nominal value ~2–3 V depending on vehicle) measured between signal and ground
  • Quiescent DC level on microphone signal line (should be stable — not open or shorted to supply/ground)
  • AC signal amplitude during speech (tens to a few hundred mV peak-to-peak depending on mic type)
  • Microphone impedance (typical small electret mics: ~1–10 kΩ; confirm in vehicle service data)
  • Continuity between microphone connector and control module pins with low resistance (< a few ohms for shield/ground; signal line should show expected impedance)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect automotive scan tool, read/record fault B13E6 and any related codes; note freeze frame data.
  2. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce the fault using voice commands or a phone call to identify intermittent behavior.
  3. Inspect microphone 3 location and connector for water, damage, debris or loose mounting. Repair as needed.
  4. With ignition on, backprobing the microphone connector: measure microphone bias voltage and quiescent signal voltage; compare to expected values in service data.
  5. If bias or signal is absent or out of range, inspect wiring harness for open/short to power or ground; perform continuity and resistance checks between mic and module.
  6. Perform wiggle/strain tests on harness connectors while monitoring live data or listening for changes; repair any intermittent wiring or poor connector fit.
  7. If wiring and bias are correct, temporarily swap or substitute a known-good microphone (if possible) or install a replacement microphone to confirm component failure.
  8. If a replacement microphone doesn’t clear the fault, investigate the audio/telephone/voice module for internal faults; check for software updates or reprogramming bulletin.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and verify system operation (voice recognition and hands-free calls) and that the DTC does not return.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or disconnected microphone 3 connector or wiring (most common)
  • Microphone element failure due to moisture or impact
  • Faulty bias supply (open/short) from the audio module
  • Intermittent connection caused by corrosion or pin damage
  • Module hardware or software fault (less common)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
