Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve DTCs and live data with a diagnostic scanner. Note sensed temperature, freeze frame and any related HVAC codes.
  2. Visually inspect the left rear face sensor, housing and harness for physical/thermal damage, debris or water ingress. Repair or dry as necessary.
  3. With connector disconnected, measure sensor resistance across its terminals at ambient. Compare to manufacturer curve. If resistance is open or shorted, replace sensor.
  4. Reconnect and back-probe the harness while observing live data: verify the sensor signal changes when you warm/cool the sensor (finger or warm air) and that reference voltage/ground are present.
  5. Check continuity and insulation between sensor connector and HVAC control module pins. Repair any opens or shorted wires, repair harness or replace connector as needed.
  6. If harness and sensor measure within expected ranges but code returns, swap with a known-good same-location sensor (or substitute a working sensor from a similar location) to confirm sensor vs. module fault.
  7. If replacement sensor does not clear the fault, check HVAC/BCM input circuitry and grounds; consult wiring diagrams and perform module-level tests or reprogramming per service information.
  8. After repair or replacement, clear DTCs and confirm fault does not return and that live data reads plausibly under varying conditions.
