Causes

  • Open or short in the wiring harness to the right duovalve
  • Corroded or loose connector at the duovalve
  • Failed duovalve actuator (stuck, internal short, or open coil)
  • Insufficient supply voltage (blown fuse, weak battery, or faulty relay)
  • Poor ground at valve or control module
  • Faulty control module output or software error

Symptoms

  • Fault stored in body control module with related dashboard message or malfunction indicator
  • Associated system function (e.g., HVAC airflow routing, vacuum system) not operating correctly on the right side
  • Clicking or no noise from the valve when commanded
  • Intermittent operation of the affected system
  • DTC returns after clearing or during certain operating conditions

What to check

  • Read and record DTC(s) and freeze frame data from the body/control module
  • Visual inspection of the duovalve, wiring harness and connector for damage, corrosion, pins pushed out, or water ingress
  • Check relevant fuses and relays for continuity and correct operation
  • Measure battery voltage with engine off/on to ensure adequate supply
  • Inspect and verify solid ground at valve and at control module
  • Backprobe or disconnect connector to check for pin corrosion and correct mating

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage to valve ~ 12 V (vehicle battery voltage) when commanded; should be close to battery voltage
  • Control signal may be switched ground or PWM from the module — check for switching behavior when commanded
  • Ground continuity: low ohms between valve ground and chassis ground
  • Actuator coil resistance should be within manufacturer specification (measure and compare to spec)
  • No short to ground or short to battery on the control line

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the customer complaint and retrieve stored DTC(s), freeze frame and event data from the control module.
  2. Visually inspect the right duovalve, connector and harness for damage, corrosion, rodent chew or water ingress. Repair any visible issues.
  3. Check related fuses and relays; replace if faulty.
  4. With connector connected, backprobe the supply and control pins. Command the valve with a scan tool and observe voltage/signal behavior. Note whether the module is sending a command.
  5. Measure supply voltage at the valve connector (should be battery voltage). Check ground continuity from valve ground to chassis ground.
  6. If commanded signal is present but valve does not move, disconnect connector and measure actuator coil resistance. If out of spec or open/shorted, replace valve.
  7. If no command from module, check continuity between module and valve connector. Repair any open/short circuits found.
  8. If wiring and valve are good but no operation, consider swapping with a known-good identical valve (if available) or test valve on bench with proper supply and ground to confirm operation.
  9. If replacement valve and repaired wiring do not clear the fault, inspect module outputs and related modules for faults or reprogram/update software as required.
  10. After repairs, clear DTCs and perform functional test and a road or system test to confirm repair; re-scan for stored or pending codes.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at Y21/2
  • Open/shorted harness between control module and valve
  • Failed duovalve actuator
  • Blown fuse or weak supply/ground
