Causes

  • Weak or discharged battery
  • Blown or corroded ignition-switched fuse
  • Faulty ignition switch or relay
  • Open/shorted wiring or poor connection to the switched 12V feed
  • Corroded/loose connector at BCM or other control module
  • Poor ground(s) for BCM or related modules

Symptoms

  • DTC B1453 stored in BCM or scan tool
  • Intermittent or permanent loss of accessories (radio, HVAC blower, power windows) with ignition ON
  • Instrument cluster warning or irregular behavior of body systems
  • Modules may show communication errors or limp functionality of some systems
  • Possible no-crank or starting problems if voltage falls further

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and other stored codes; note conditions when fault set
  • Measure battery resting voltage and state-of-health (load test if needed)
  • With key ON (engine OFF) measure voltage at battery and at the BCM switched 12V supply pin(s) — compare values
  • Check ignition-switched fuses and relays related to body/BCM power
  • Inspect wiring harnesses, connectors and pins for corrosion, damage or poor fit at BCM and ignition switch
  • Check main ground points for continuity and voltage drop to chassis and battery negative

Signal parameters

  • Expected switched supply voltage with ignition ON (KOEO): ~12.0–14.5 V (battery/charging system dependent)
  • Low-voltage condition threshold: typically below ~9.0–10.0 V (manufacturer-specific)
  • Measure at key positions: ACC, ON (KOEO), and during cranking for transient issues
  • Observe voltage drop under load and at connectors (voltage difference between battery positive and module feed)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool, record freeze frame and related codes; clear codes and attempt to reproduce.
  2. Verify battery health and terminal condition. Charge or replace battery if low or weak.
  3. With key OFF, visually inspect ignition-switched fuses, fusible links and relays; replace any suspect components.
  4. With key ON (engine OFF) backprobe the BCM switched 12V input and measure voltage; compare to battery positive. Note any low reading or large voltage drop.
  5. If low at module, backprobe ignition switch output and related fuses/relays to find where voltage drops. Wiggle connectors to check for intermittent faults.
  6. Inspect and test ground straps for continuity and voltage drop (battery negative to chassis and engine to chassis). Clean/tighten as required.
  7. Repair any damaged wiring, corroded connectors or replace blown fuses/relays. After repairs, re-measure voltages to confirm proper levels.
  8. If wiring, fuses, grounds and ignition switch test good but low voltage persists at the module, consider module supply driver fault — consult wiring diagrams and prepare to replace BCM only after all circuit checks are complete.
  9. Clear codes, retest under the same conditions that originally set the code, and road test to verify repair.

Likely causes

  • Blown ignition-switched fuse or fusible link
  • Loose/corroded connector at BCM or ignition switch
  • Broken or shorted wire between ignition switch and BCM
  • Battery voltage low or poor battery terminals
  • Bad ground at module or chassis ground strap
  • Failing ignition switch contacts
