Causes

  • Damaged or chafed wiring shorting positive feed to the relay control circuit
  • Welded or stuck relay contacts causing permanent feed to pump
  • Short inside the washer pump motor (internal wiring short to positive)
  • Corrosion or water ingress at connector pins causing unintended continuity to battery
  • Faulty Body Control Module (BCM) or relay driver output shorted to battery
  • Blown or incorrect fuse or fusible link

Symptoms

  • Washer pump and/or wiper motor runs continuously or intermittently without switch input
  • Blown fuse or recurring fuse failure on washer/wiper circuit
  • Washer system inoperative or behaves unpredictably
  • Battery drain with ignition off (parasitic draw)
  • Related dashboard warnings or stored body-control fault codes

What to check

  • Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data from BCM and related modules
  • Visually inspect wiring harnesses, connectors and relay socket for damage, corrosion or melting
  • Check fuse and fusible link for the washer/wiper circuit
  • Disconnect washer pump connector and check if undesired operation stops
  • Measure voltage at relay control pin with switch off — should be low (near 0 V)
  • Measure current draw from battery with ignition off to detect parasitic drain

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage at power feed: ~12.2–12.8 V (engine off), ~13.5–14.7 V (engine running)
  • Relay coil/control circuit when OFF: near 0 V; when ON: battery voltage (~12 V)
  • If short-to-battery fault present: relay control circuit shows battery voltage with switch OFF
  • Washer pump current draw (typical): ~0.5–6 A depending on pump — a near short will show much higher or a near-zero resistance
  • Continuity: control circuit to battery positive should be open with ignition off (infinite/very high Ω)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all related DTCs and freeze-frame data from BCM and wiper/washer modules.
  2. Visually inspect fuses, relay, connector and harness for obvious damage or corrosion; replace any damaged fuses/relays temporarily for testing if safe.
  3. With ignition off, disconnect washer pump connector. If unwanted operation stops, suspect pump or harness downstream of connector.
  4. Measure voltage at the relay control/driver pin with switch OFF. Battery voltage present indicates a short to battery or stuck relay.
  5. Remove relay and check continuity between relay control terminal and battery positive. A low-resistance path indicates a short in wiring or component.
  6. Isolate sections of the harness: unplug intermediate connectors and measure until short is isolated to a segment or component.
  7. Bench-test the washer pump separately by applying controlled 12 V and measuring current to confirm if the pump is shorted internally.
  8. Inspect harness routing (firewall, hinges) for chafe points; repair damaged wiring with correct gauge wire and protect with split loom/grommets.
  9. Replace any defective relay, damaged wiring, corroded connector terminals or the pump as required.
  10. Reconnect battery, clear codes, and perform functional test cycles to confirm fault is resolved and no parasitic draw remains.

Likely causes

  • Chafed/abraded wiring harness where it passes the firewall or near moving components
  • Failed washer pump with internal short
  • Relay welded closed or internally shorted
  • Corroded connector at pump or relay providing battery feed even when switched off

Fault status

⚠️ Status
