Causes

  • Open or short in right front door handle wiring (broken wire at hinge area)
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector at the handle or door harness
  • Failed handle switch or touch sensor (mechanical microswitch or capacitive sensor)
  • Water intrusion into handle assembly or connector
  • Poor ground or intermittent contact in door harness
  • Faulty Body Control Module (rare) or software issue

Symptoms

  • Right front door may not unlock/lock using the exterior handle (keyless entry may not respond)
  • Intermittent or inconsistent unlock/lock from right front handle
  • DTC B1487 stored and may reappear after clearing
  • Possible door ajar or related warning if BCM detects abnormal state
  • No illumination or LED feedback on the right front handle (if equipped)

What to check

  • Read and record faults, freeze frame and live data with a compatible scan tool; note if the DTC is current or historic
  • Operate the right front handle while observing live data to see if the handle signal changes
  • Visual inspection of right front handle assembly, connector and wiring harness (check for corrosion, damage, water ingress)
  • Inspect wiring through the door hinge area for chafing, broken conductors or pin damage; perform wiggle test while monitoring signal
  • Check connector pins for corrosion, bent pins or poor mating; unplug and inspect both sides
  • Measure connector reference voltage and ground at the BCM connector and at the handle connector

Signal parameters

  • Handle input is typically a digital switch/sensor input to the BCM; expected behavior: stable idle voltage and a clear change when handle operated
  • Typical expected voltages (design-dependent): open ≈ 9–12 V (pulled-up) and actuated ≈ 0–1 V (pulled to ground), or the reverse on some designs; consult vehicle wiring diagram
  • Closed switch resistance: near 0–5 Ω between signal and ground; open: very high (kΩ to OL)
  • No more than intermittent/noisy toggling on live-data when handle not being operated
  • Current draw for the input is very low; do not apply high test currents to the sensor

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a scan tool: confirm B1487 is present, view freeze frame and live data. Clear code and attempt to re-create to confirm current fault.
  2. Visual inspection: examine right front handle, pins and harness; check for signs of water, corrosion or impact damage.
  3. Operate handle while watching live data: note whether the BCM sees the state change and whether it is stable.
  4. Wiggle test: gently flex the door harness at the hinge and handle while monitoring the input for intermittent signals.
  5. With ignition ON, backprobe the handle signal connector and measure voltage to ground while operating handle. Compare to expected values in manufacturer data.
  6. With battery disconnected, check continuity/resistance of the signal wire between handle connector and BCM pin. Repair any opens or high resistance.
  7. Check for short to power or ground by measuring resistance from signal wire to battery positive and ground; isolate wiring sections to locate short.
  8. If wiring and connector are good but symptom persists, swap/replace the right front handle sensor/switch assembly and retest.
  9. If replacement of handle does not correct issue and wiring is confirmed good, consider BCM input circuit diagnosis or replacement—refer to Alfa Romeo service manual for BCM pinouts and test procedures.
  10. After repair, clear codes and confirm stable operation through multiple open/close cycles and a short road test if necessary.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/contaminated connector at handle or door harness
  • Broken/chafed wire in the door hinge area (most common due to flexing)
  • Failed handle switch or sensor (wear or water damage)
  • Short to ground from water ingress or pin damage
  • BCM input circuit fault (least likely)
