Causes

  • Broken or disconnected wiring harness to tailgate anti-theft sensor
  • Corroded, pushed-out, or damaged connector at the sensor or module
  • Failed tailgate anti-theft sensor (micro switch) or switch plunger
  • Blown fuse or power supply issue to the sensor circuit
  • Poor or missing ground at the sensor or BCM/BCM input
  • Water intrusion or physical damage to the tailgate area

Symptoms

  • DTC B1496 present in scan tool and anti-theft warning light/message
  • Tailgate may not lock/unlock properly or triggers false alarm
  • Interior or instrument cluster shows tailgate open when closed
  • No response from tailgate anti-theft sensor input (no change on activation)
  • Intermittent operation of tailgate latch or alarm when closing/opening tailgate

What to check

  • Scan vehicle for B1496 and related codes; note freeze frame/live data for tailgate input
  • Visually inspect tailgate wiring, especially through hinge boots and near latch
  • Inspect connectors at tailgate sensor, latch assembly, and BCM for corrosion, bent pins or water
  • Check tailgate fuse(s) and applicable power/ground circuits
  • Operate tailgate while watching live data or continuity to determine open/close changes
  • Wiggle test harness while watching live data to reproduce fault

Signal parameters

  • Open-circuit reading: infinite/OL on continuity check between sensor output and BCM
  • Closed (sensor actuated) continuity: typically near 0–5 ohms (mechanical switch to ground) — vehicle-specific
  • Open (sensor released) resistance: very high or open (>10 kΩ) or OL
  • Typical signal voltage: many body sensors are pull-up inputs — expect ~0–1 V (closed to ground) and ~3–5 V (open) on a 5 V reference; some systems use battery voltage so open may read ~12 V — consult vehicle wiring diagram
  • Note: exact levels vary by model/year; always verify with vehicle-specific service data

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record codes and freeze frame data with a scan tool. Note associated modules and live data for the tailgate sensor input.
  2. Attempt to reproduce the fault (operate/close tailgate) while watching live data to see if sensor state changes. If intermittent, perform wiggle test at harness.
  3. Visually inspect tailgate sensor, latch area, connectors, wiring grommets and rubber boot through hinges for damage, chafing, or water ingress.
  4. With ignition off, disconnect tailgate sensor connector and inspect pins for corrosion, bent pins, or pushed-out terminals. Repair or replace connector as needed.
  5. Check relevant fuses and power/ground circuits feeding the sensor/BCM input. Verify good ground continuity to chassis and BCM ground.
  6. Backprobe the sensor connector with ignition on and measure signal/reference voltage and ground. Compare to expected values from signal_params and service manual.
  7. Perform continuity check between the sensor connector and the BCM input pin to locate open in wiring. Pay attention to the harness through the tailgate hinge boot where chafing commonly occurs.
  8. If wiring is good, bench-test or replace the tailgate anti-theft sensor (micro switch) and re-test for proper signal change and code presence.
  9. Repair any damaged wiring or connector faults, reseal against moisture, then clear codes and perform function test (cycle tailgate, lock/unlock, alarm arming).
  10. If problem persists after wiring and sensor replacement, consider BCM input fault; verify BCM grounds and power. Consult manufacturer service manual for BCM bench/flash procedures before replacement.

Likely causes

  • Damaged/rotten wiring in the tailgate harness (rub through at hinge area)
  • Failed/misaligned tailgate anti-theft micro switch
  • Corroded or loose connector pin at the sensor or BCM
  • Water damage causing open/interrupt in circuit

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Tailgate anti-theft sensor circuit open — no valid signal detected from the tailgate anti-theft switch (open circuit or interrupted wiring).
