Causes

  • Failed/ open filament or LED within the instrument cluster indicator lamp
  • Broken or disconnected wiring between the turn signal circuit and the instrument cluster

  • Open ground for the indicator circuit
  • Body Control Module (BCM) or instrument cluster internal failure or connector fault
  • Aftermarket work or previous repairs damaged the circuit

Symptoms

  • Right turn indicator lamp on instrument cluster does not illuminate when right turn signal is selected
  • Turn signal audible click and exterior right turn lamps may still function (depends on system)
  • Dash indicator may be missing, intermittent, or show warning message

What to check

  • Read stored codes and freeze frame with a scan tool; record and clear codes
  • Visually inspect instrument cluster area and connectors for damage, corrosion or loose pins
  • Inspect wiring harness for physical damage along routing to BCM and fuse/junction blocks
  • Check exterior right turn lamps and fuses for normal operation (helps isolate cluster vs. external circuit)
  • Use a scan tool to command the right indicator lamp and monitor module outputs and lamp status PIDs

Signal parameters

  • Switch commanded state: right turn ON when selector engaged
  • Expected feed voltage at lamp connector when commanded: approx. battery voltage (~11–14 V) pulsed or switched (system-dependent)
  • Expected lamp current: low for cluster LED, higher for incandescent (tens to hundreds of mA for bulb; a few mA for indicator LED)
  • Flasher/BCM output frequency: typical turn signal flash ~0.5–2 Hz (about 60–120 flashes per minute)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool, read and record stored body/cluster codes including B1504; clear codes and attempt to re-run test by commanding right turn signal.
  2. Verify exterior right turn lamps operate when right signal is selected. If exterior lamps do not operate, diagnose exterior circuit first (fuses, bulbs, wiring, flasher/BCM output).
  3. Visually inspect the instrument cluster connectors and wiring harness for damage or corrosion. Wiggle-test connectors while commanding the right indicator and watch for lamp activity or code reappearance.
  4. With key ON and right signal commanded, measure voltage at the instrument cluster lamp pin: you should see pulsed voltage near battery voltage. If no voltage, trace back to BCM/fuse/junction to find open.
  5. If you have access to the cluster lamp contact, check lamp continuity to ground with meter (power disconnected). An open reading indicates failed lamp element or open wiring. For LED indicators continuity may not be direct; consult cluster wiring diagram.
  6. Check ground(s) for continuity to chassis; repair any high-resistance or open grounds.
  7. If wiring and connectors are good but no output from BCM/turn module, check BCM outputs using scan tool or lab scope. If BCM shows no output while commanding, suspect BCM or its connector; verify supply and ground to BCM first.
  8. If suspect instrument cluster lamp failure, remove cluster and bench-test lamp assembly or substitute known-good cluster to confirm.
  9. Repair or replace failed wiring/connectors, lamp element, instrument cluster, or BCM as indicated by test results. Clear codes and verify repair by repeating command test and road test as needed.

  • Open/failed indicator lamp (LED or filament) inside instrument cluster
  • Disconnected/corroded connector or pin at instrument cluster or BCM
  • Broken wire or damaged insulation between the right turn signal feed and cluster ground
  • Open ground or common return for the dash indicator circuit
