Causes

  • Damaged or chafed wiring harness causing insulation breach and contact with chassis ground
  • Corroded or pushed-back connector terminals at the right turn indicator lamp or instrument cluster
  • Failed or shorted turn indicator bulb or LED module
  • Faulty instrument cluster / body control module (BCM) output stage
  • Aftermarket accessory or recent repair that disturbed the turn signal circuit
  • Shorted ground path through lamp holder or adjacent circuits

Symptoms

  • Right turn indicator warning lamp on dash not functioning or constantly illuminated
  • Turn signal for right side may not flash or may be inoperative
  • Related warning message or lamp on instrument cluster
  • Possible intermittent operation of right-side turn lights
  • Stored B1506 DTC and possibly related communication entries in BCM

What to check

  • Read all stored DTCs from all modules and note freeze-frame data
  • Visually inspect right front/rear indicator lamp, socket and connector for corrosion, damage or moisture
  • Check related fuses and relays for the lighting circuits
  • Operate right turn signal and observe behavior while scanning live data (BCM outputs)
  • Measure voltage at the right indicator lamp connector with turn signal on and with connector disconnected
  • Perform a resistance-to-ground check on the lamp output pin with ignition off (connector disconnected)

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage (nominal): ~12–14.5 V (engine running ~13.5–14.5 V)
  • Expected lamp output when driving: ~12 V when active, near open/high impedance when inactive
  • Short-to-ground indication: continuity to chassis ground typically < 5 ohms (varies by circuit)
  • Open-circuit/normal off: very high resistance / open (kilo-ohms to MΩ) from output pin to ground with connector disconnected

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm DTC B1506 with scan tool and clear then re-run to verify repeatability.
  2. Visually inspect right side turn lamp(s), lens, socket and wiring for damage, corrosion or water ingress. Repair as needed.
  3. Disconnect the right turn indicator lamp connector. Clear the code and operate the right turn signal. If the code no longer sets, the fault is in the lamp or downstream wiring—inspect/replace bulb or LED module and socket.
  4. With connector disconnected, measure resistance from the BCM/cluster output pin to chassis ground. Low resistance indicates a short in the harness or module output.
  5. If short remains with lamp disconnected, trace wiring back from connector in sections. Look for pinched areas, chafe points (bumper mounts, body seams), or aftermarket splices. Repair damaged wiring and insulate.
  6. If wiring checks good, verify the BCM/instrument cluster output by measuring voltage/waveform while commanding the right indicator. If the output is shorted internally (no normal switching/high current draw), consider module repair or replacement following manufacturer procedures.
  7. After repairs, reconnect, clear codes, and verify correct operation of right turn indicator on vehicle test drive and with scan tool monitoring.
  8. If intermittent, perform wiggle tests on harness and re-check connectors, and consider protective sleeving or routing changes.

Likely causes

  • Broken insulation on wiring near lamp or along harness (common at connectors, door/bumper entry points)
  • Corroded lamp socket or connector causing low resistance to ground
  • LED module internally shorted (if vehicle uses LED indicators)
  • BCM or instrument cluster output transistor or driver failure
  • Incorrect bulb type (unlikely but possible with mismatched LED/filament)
