Causes

  • Damaged wiring (chafing, pinched, cut) to the recirculation stepper motor
  • Corroded or loose connector terminals
  • Open or shorted motor windings (stepper motor failure)
  • Faulty ground or power supply to the motor
  • Faulty climate control / HVAC control module or driver transistor
  • Poor mechanical linkage (binding damper) causing motor stall and wiring damage

Symptoms

  • Recirculation door/flap stuck in one position (always fresh or always recirculate)
  • Inability to change interior air recirculation setting from controls
  • Audible clicking or no sound from stepper motor when changing mode
  • HVAC system reports related DTC(s) and may show limited functionality
  • Intermittent operation of recirculation function

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame / related DTCs and clear code to see if it returns
  • Visual inspection of recirculation stepper motor connector and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, or pin deformation
  • With ignition on, verify fuse(s) and main power supply to HVAC control circuit
  • Use an appropriate scan tool to command the recirculation motor and observe actuator position and live data
  • Check for proper ground at the motor connector (back-probe ground pin)
  • Measure resistance of motor windings at the connector (with connector disconnected)

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage (ignition on): approx. battery voltage (11–14 V) present at motor power feed when required
  • Control signals: stepper/driver outputs are pulsed by HVAC module — expect switching/pulsing behavior on control pins during commanded movement
  • Coil resistance (typical): varies by design — check service data; expect a finite resistance value (often in the single- to low-double-ohm to low-double-digit-ohm range). Readings of infinite (open) or near 0 Ω (short) indicate fault
  • Short-to-ground indication: control module sees low resistance to ground on a driver output when it should be open

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Obtain vehicle-specific wiring diagram and connector pinout for the recirculation stepper motor
  2. Perform visual inspection of harness and connector; repair any obvious damage
  3. Check and record voltage at the motor power feed with ignition on and recirculation commanded — verify battery voltage present when motor should be active
  4. Back-probe control/driver pins and command the motor with a scan tool; observe for pulsed outputs and voltage changes
  5. Disconnect motor connector and measure coil resistance between coil pins and to ground. Compare to service data; look for open circuit (OL/infinite) or short to ground (near 0 Ω)
  6. If wiring and connector are OK but resistance is abnormal, replace the stepper motor assembly
  7. If motor checks OK, test continuity between HVAC control module and motor connector pins; repair any open/shorted circuits
  8. If wiring and motor are good, check driver outputs at the module; if driver is not switching and wiring is good, diagnose/replace the HVAC control module or its driver
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform actuator calibration / relearn if required and verify proper operation

Likely causes

  • Connector at the stepper motor corroded or pins bent
  • Wire insulation worn where harness rubs against body/duct
  • Stepper motor internal windings are open or shorted to motor body
  • Blown fuse or poor ground at chassis connection feeding the motor
  • HVAC control module driver output failed

Fault status

⚠️ Status
