Memory Set Switch Circuit Short To Ground

Causes

  • Damaged or chafed wiring shorting to chassis ground
  • Corroded or bent connector pins contacting ground
  • Failed memory set switch with internal short
  • Water intrusion or contamination in switch or connector
  • Aftermarket accessory or repair introduced a ground fault
  • Faulty control module (rare)

Symptoms

  • Memory set function (seat/mirror/steering memory) inoperative
  • Intermittent or no response when pressing the memory set switch
  • Possible blown fuse related to memory circuit
  • Related warning message or lamp and stored DTC
  • Operation returns to normal after reconnecting harness or temporarily manipulating wiring (intermittent)

What to check

  • Perform a visual inspection of the memory switch, connector and wiring for damage, corrosion or moisture
  • Check related fuses and fusible links for open or signs of overheating
  • Backprobe the switch connector with ignition on and measure reference and signal voltages
  • With connector disconnected, check continuity between the switch signal pin and chassis ground (should be open/infinite)
  • Wiggle test wiring harness while monitoring signal to reproduce intermittent shorts

Signal parameters

  • Reference voltage: typically 5 V (some systems may use ignition-switched 12 V) present at switch connector with ignition ON
  • Switch closed signal: near 0 V (ground) when intended to be grounded by the switch, otherwise near reference voltage
  • Open-circuit resistance from signal pin to ground: very high (kΩ / open) with ignition OFF and connector disconnected
  • Short-to-ground condition: continuity (low ohms) between signal pin and chassis ground with connector connected or during fault

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame and any related codes; record vehicle symptoms and recent repairs or modifications.
  2. Visually inspect the memory set switch, bezel and connector for damage, corrosion, water entry, or loose pins. Check routing of harness for chafing against body panels or sharp edges.
  3. Check fuses and relays for the memory/comfort system. Replace blown fuses only after diagnosing cause.
  4. With ignition ON, backprobe the switch connector. Verify reference voltage is present at the expected terminal (usually ~5 V or battery voltage depending on system).
  5. Operate the switch while monitoring the signal pin. Confirm signal voltage changes as expected (toggle between reference and ground when pressed).
  6. Turn ignition OFF and disconnect the switch connector. Measure resistance/continuity between the signal pin and chassis ground. A low resistance indicates a short to ground in the switch or downstream wiring.
  7. If short is present with connector disconnected, replace the switch assembly. If short disappears with connector disconnected, isolate wiring between switch and control module using backprobing and sectional continuity tests.
  8. Inspect and repair any damaged wiring, replace corroded terminals or connectors, and properly secure harness away from pinch points. Use dielectric grease if moisture ingress is an issue.
  9. After repair, clear codes and verify repair by cycling ignition and operating memory set functions; perform a road/test cycle as required to confirm no recurrence.
  10. If wiring and switch check OK, consider module input pin test or professional module diagnosis (module faults are uncommon).

Likely causes

  • Wiring harness insulation damaged where it contacts body metal
  • Connector terminal pushed out, bent, or corroded making unintended ground
  • Memory set switch internal failure
  • Water or debris in the switch/connector causing a short
  • Improperly routed or pinched wiring after recent service or modification
