Causes

  • Damaged or disconnected wiring between Memory 1 switch and BCM
  • Corroded or loose connector pins at the switch or BCM
  • Failed Memory 1 momentary switch (mechanical/electrical failure)
  • Short to power or ground in the switch circuit
  • Missing or blown fuse for the memory/seat module circuit
  • Faulty BCM input or internal module failure

Symptoms

  • Memory position 1 button does not store or recall position
  • Memory switch unresponsive or works intermittently
  • Related seats/mirrors do not move when Memory 1 pressed
  • DTC B1531 stored and possibly related lamp/message on dash
  • Other memory positions may work while Memory 1 fails

What to check

  • Read and record stored DTCs and freeze frame data with a diagnostic tool
  • Visually inspect switch, connectors and harness for damage, corrosion or water
  • Verify fuse(s) for memory/seat modules are intact and correct rating
  • Operate Memory 1 switch while watching connector and measuring voltage
  • Check for continuity between switch pins and BCM pins; wiggle harness to reproduce fault
  • Measure reference voltage/signal at switch with ignition ON and while pressing switch

Signal parameters

  • Typical supply/reference voltage: ~12 V (ignition ON) or specified by vehicle wiring
  • Memory switch closed resistance: low (near 0–5 ohms); open = OL/infinite
  • Switch signal may be a pull-to-ground or pull-to-Vref depending on design — watch for 0 V or ~12 V change when pressed
  • Continuity between switch and BCM pin: near 0 ohms (allow for connector contact resistance)
  • No short to battery positive or chassis ground when switch is released

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a factory-level scan tool. Read and record DTCs, freeze frame and any related body module codes.
  2. Confirm operation: attempt to use the Memory 1 function while observing symptom and ensuring other memory positions are tested for comparison.
  3. Visually inspect the Memory 1 switch, its connector, and the harness (especially hinge/seat-track areas) for damage, corrosion, or moisture.
  4. Check relevant fuses and power/ignition feeds to the memory/seat circuits; replace any blown fuses and retest.
  5. With connector disconnected, measure reference supply at the switch connector with ignition ON to confirm proper Vref/ground present.
  6. Operate the switch and measure the switch signal line for the expected change (to ground or to Vbat). If no change, test continuity between the switch connector and the BCM input pin.
  7. Wiggle the harness and connectors while monitoring the signal to identify intermittent faults. Repair or replace damaged wiring or terminals.
  8. If wiring and switch check good, swap or bench-test the switch (if serviceable) or install a known-good switch and retest.
  9. If circuit and switch are OK but code remains, verify BCM input operation. Check for updateable software and perform BCM resets or reprogramming per manufacturer procedures.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and confirm proper operation across multiple ignition cycles and door/seat positions.

Likely causes

  • Faulty memory switch (most common)
  • Open/short in the harness or damaged insulation near door/seat
  • Corroded connector pin at the switch or BCM connector
  • Poor ground or missing fuse affecting the circuit
  • Intermittent connection from wiring flex point (hinge/seat track)
  • BCM input channel fault (less common)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Memory 1 switch circuit fault: BCM detected open/short or intermittent signal on the Memory 1 input. Function for stored position 1 may be inoperative until circuit is repaired.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
