Causes

  • Chafed or pinched wiring in the door harness (common at the door hinge/boot)
  • Corroded or damaged connector making unintended ground contact
  • Failed window motor with internal short to ground
  • Faulty window switch or control module output shorted to ground
  • Water ingress in door causing shorting/ corrosion
  • Aftermarket accessory or repair incorrectly routed/grounded wiring

Symptoms

  • Affected window does not operate (stuck open/closed or in-between)
  • Blown fuse(s) for power windows or repeated fuse failure
  • Intermittent or erratic window movement
  • DTC B1550 stored in BCM and possible related body network warnings
  • Other door/window circuits may be affected if short shares common wiring

What to check

  • Read and record stored DTCs and freeze-frame data; check for related codes
  • Visually inspect wiring and connectors at the door hinge, door module, and window motor for damage, corrosion, or water
  • Check fuses and fusible links for the power window circuit
  • Disconnect the window motor and operate the switch to see if code reappears
  • Measure voltage at the window motor supply and switch with ignition ON and while operating
  • Check continuity between the suspect circuit and chassis ground with power removed

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage: nominal 12–14 V at vehicle battery
  • Window motor supply (when switch commanded up/down): near battery voltage (~12 V) at motor feed; ~0 V when not commanded
  • Circuit-to-chassis continuity (power off): high resistance (>10 kΩ) expected; near 0 Ω indicates short to ground
  • Motor current draw: nominal dependent on motor (typically 2–15 A); excessive current suggests motor/internal short or mechanical binding
  • Switch output: toggles between ground and supply or PWM depending on system; no command when switch inactive

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record DTCs, clear codes, then attempt to operate the window to re-create the fault and confirm B1550 returns.
  2. Inspect door harness at the hinge/boot for visible abrasion, pinching, or corrosion. Repair any damaged insulation or routing issues.
  3. Visually inspect and clean connectors at the door control module, window motor, and central wiring harness. Re-seat connectors.
  4. With ignition OFF, disconnect the window motor. Check continuity between the motor feed circuit and chassis ground. If short remains with motor disconnected, suspect wiring or BCM.
  5. With ignition ON, backprobe the motor feed and switch connectors. Operate switch and observe voltage: if feed is held at ground or shorted, isolate by unplugging connectors progressively toward the BCM to locate section with short.
  6. If short is isolated to door harness, repair/replace the damaged section or harness and protect with loom/tubing and proper routing through the hinge area.
  7. If short persists with all door harnesses disconnected, suspect BCM or body control module output short — confirm with manufacturer-specific tests before replacing module.
  8. After repair, clear codes and fully cycle the window to verify correct operation and ensure B1550 does not return.
  9. If any module replacement is performed, follow manufacturer procedures for programming/configuration where required.

Likely causes

  • Wiring insulation worn at the door jamb causing contact with body ground
  • Connector pins corroded or bent, causing pin-to-ground contact
  • Failed motor or regulator with internal electrical fault
  • Shorted output in BCM or window control module
  • Damaged vehicle grounding strap or body seam ground at door

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored code B1550 — Main window (door glass) circuit short to ground detected by body control module. Fault may be present continuously or intermittently; may cause loss of window function or blown fuses. Further electrical isolation required to locate short.
