Causes

  • DTC B1561 stored and possibly lamp illuminated

What to check

  • Visual inspection of driver door switch and surrounding area for physical damage, corrosion, or clogged/plastic actuator
  • Inspect wiring harness through door hinge area for chafing, broken wires, or pinched sections
  • Unplug switch connector and inspect terminals for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture
  • Check for water ingress or foreign material around the switch actuator
  • Scan tool: confirm B1561 is current or historic and view freeze frame/live data for the door switch status

Signal parameters

  • Expected switch behavior: normally-closed contact when door is closed; circuit should show continuity when actuated (closed) and open when door is open
  • Continuity: near 0–2 Ω when the switch is mechanically closed (values vary by design)
  • Open-circuit: very high resistance or OL when switch is open
  • Voltage: depending on vehicle design the BCM may pull the circuit to ground or to reference voltage — with key ON you may read ~0 V (closed to ground) or near battery voltage when open; consult vehicle wiring diagram for exact reference voltages

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record freeze frame and live data with a scan tool; confirm DTC B1561 presence and whether it is current or intermittent
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the driver door switch, actuator, connector and wiring harness (pay attention to door hinge/pigtail area)
  3. With connector unplugged, check for terminal corrosion, bent pins or moisture; clean and reconnect if minor corrosion is found
  4. Check continuity of the switch: remove switch or access wiring and actuate switch while measuring resistance — verify it closes (low resistance) when actuated and opens when released
  5. Backprobe the switch connector with scan tool or DVOM while operating the switch to confirm the BCM sees the expected state change
  6. Wiggle test the harness through the door jamb while monitoring continuity or live data to find intermittent opens due to chafing
  7. If wiring and connector are good but switch fails to operate correctly, replace the driver door cut switch and retest
  8. After repair, clear codes, cycle power and operate door several times; verify the DTC does not return and that system functions are normal
  9. If problem persists and all wiring and switch check good, consult wiring diagram and consider BCM input circuit testing or replacement by a qualified repairer; avoid replacing BCM without exhaustive wiring verification
