Causes

  • Seized or failed mirror adjuster motor/actuator
  • Stripped or damaged gearbox gears or linkage inside mirror housing
  • Foreign object, ice, corrosion or mechanical obstruction in mirror housing
  • Open/short in wiring harness or damaged connector pins
  • Faulty mirror control switch or body control module (BCM)/mirror control module
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying mirror circuit

Symptoms

  • Passenger exterior mirror does not move when adjusted
  • Grinding, clicking or no sound from mirror when operating switch
  • Mirror stuck in one position and cannot be retracted or folded
  • Steady or intermittent DTC present for mirror circuit
  • Possible burning smell or high current draw if motor is stalled
  • Warning or message on instrument panel (manufacturer dependent)

What to check

  • Visually inspect passenger mirror housing for damage, ice, debris or foreign objects
  • Operate mirror while listening for motor noise and observing movement
  • Scan vehicle for stored DTCs and note related body/BCM codes
  • Check mirror fuse(s) and any related relays
  • Inspect wiring and connector for corrosion, water intrusion, broken wires, or bent pins
  • Measure supply voltage at mirror connector while operating switch (expect ~11–14 V)

Signal parameters

  • Mirror supply voltage when commanded: approx. 11–14 V (vehicle battery voltage)
  • Motor stall/activation current: can spike; typical small mirror motors may draw 1–10 A peak — consult vehicle-specific data
  • At-rest supply current: near 0 A when idle
  • Position sensor or feedback signal (if fitted): variable voltage or resistance dependent on design — typically 0–5 V or specific resistance values
  • CAN/vehicle network: mirror command messages present on CAN when switch operated (if applicable)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm complaint: attempt operation and reproduce symptom; note noises and exact behavior.
  2. Read and record all related DTCs with a diagnostic scan tool (BCM/body module).
  3. Visually inspect mirror assembly, remove debris/ice and check for obvious mechanical damage.
  4. Check fuses and relays for the mirror circuit; replace if blown.
  5. With key on, operate mirror and measure voltage at the mirror motor connector. No voltage: trace back to switch/BCM, check wiring continuity and ground.
  6. If voltage is present but mirror does not move, measure current. High current or stall indicates mechanical bind or seized motor/gearbox.
  7. Disconnect mirror connector and bench-test motor by applying 12 V directly (brief pulses, correct polarity). If motor runs, problem is wiring/connector/controls; if not, remove mirror and inspect gearbox and motor.
  8. Inspect and, if necessary, disassemble mirror housing to check gears, linkages and motor mounting; replace damaged components.
  9. Repair/replace wiring, connector or switch as needed; ensure corrosion is cleaned and contacts protected.
  10. After repairs, clear DTCs, perform any required mirror calibration/learn procedure with diagnostic tool and retest operation.
  11. Safety note: support mirror assembly during testing/repair and avoid forcing damaged plastic components.

Likely causes

  • Actuator motor seized or gearbox stripped (most common)
  • Wiring break or poor ground at mirror connector
  • Connector corrosion/wet connector preventing power to motor
  • Control switch failure or BCM not commanding mirror
  • Obstruction (ice/debris) physically preventing movement

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Passenger exterior mirror actuator/circuit fault detected — mirror not moving or movement obstructed. Service required to inspect motor, gearbox, wiring or control.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
