Passenger Side Airbag Fault

Causes

  • Open or short in passenger airbag squib wiring
  • Poor/loose corroded connector at airbag module or SRS control module
  • Failed passenger airbag (squib) or inflator
  • Faulty SRS (airbag) control module or internal fault
  • Faulty seat occupancy / passenger presence sensor or related harness
  • Damage from previous repair, water ingress, or impact

Symptoms

  • SRS / airbag warning lamp illuminated or flashing
  • Passenger airbag disabled or “off” indicator may be lit (vehicle dependent)
  • Possible stored SRS fault codes and freeze‑frame data
  • No other visible crash symptoms unless caused by wiring damage

What to check

  • Read SRS codes and freeze‑frame with a capable scan tool; record all SRS codes
  • Confirm SRS warning lamp behavior (steady vs. flashing) and any passenger airbag status indicator
  • Visually inspect passenger airbag connector(s), wiring harness under dash and in passenger seat area for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
  • Inspect passenger presence / occupancy sensor (seat) connections if vehicle equipped
  • Check for recent collision repairs or water/moisture exposure in passenger area

Signal parameters

  • Airbag squib circuit resistance (with battery disconnected and connector unplugged): expected low resistance (typically a few ohms) — an open/infinite or very high value indicates an open circuit
  • Short to battery or ground: measured near 0 ohms indicates a short condition
  • SRS module supply/reference voltage: battery voltage present at module power/ground pins when key on
  • SRS diagnostic status and readiness flags as reported by scan tool
  • Freeze‑frame: vehicle conditions when code set (voltage, seat occupancy, crash detection flags)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: follow OEM SRS safety procedures. Disable vehicle battery per manufacturer instructions and wait the required time before touching SRS components.
  2. Connect a capable scan tool and retrieve all SRS DTCs and freeze‑frame data. Note related B‑ or U‑codes and any passenger presence codes.
  3. Clear codes, perform an ignition cycle, and see if B1927 returns to confirm persistent fault.
  4. Visually inspect passenger airbag module connector(s) (dash/seat), harness routing, and connectors for damage, corrosion, bent pins, or loose terminals.
  5. Inspect passenger seat occupancy sensor connectors and wiring (if equipped) as related faults can affect passenger airbag circuits.
  6. With battery disconnected and following OEM procedures, measure squib circuit resistance at the airbag connector and at the SRS module connector (compare values and watch for opens/shorts). Only measure with module disconnected and follow safety guidance.
  7. If open/short present, trace and repair wiring or replace damaged connector(s).
  8. If wiring and connectors are good but squib shows abnormal resistance, replace the passenger airbag (module/inflator) only per OEM replacement rules.
  9. If circuits and airbag unit are within spec but fault persists, consider SRS control module fault — verify module power/ground and communications, then replace or reprogram module per OEM instructions.
  10. After repairs, clear codes, perform SRS system checks with scan tool, and verify warning lamp extinguished and no return of B1927.

Likely causes

  • Wiring harness damage or disconnected connector at passenger airbag
  • Corroded/poor connector contact at airbag or SRS module
  • Passenger airbag squib failure or internal short
  • Fault in passenger presence/weight sensor causing related fault
  • SRS control module reporting sensor/circuit diagnostic failure

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Passenger-side airbag circuit fault detected. SRS warning lamp illuminated; passenger airbag may be disabled until repaired.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
