Causes

  • Faulty satellite antenna module or internal electronics
  • Intermittent or high-resistance ground(s) shared between satellite antenna and roof control/BCM
  • Corroded, damaged or loose wiring/connectors in the antenna or roof harness
  • Low battery voltage or poor battery/charging system performance causing reduced motor speed
  • Faulty sliding roof motor, regulator or mechanical binding in roof tracks
  • Water ingress or corrosion at the satellite antenna or roof control connectors

Symptoms

  • Sliding roof moves slower than normal or hesitates during operation
  • DTC B1A89 stored in BCM or communication module
  • Possible intermittent roof operation or partial open/close
  • Occasional other body electronics warnings or communication errors
  • Possible water ingress smells or visible corrosion near antenna or roof connectors

What to check

  • Read and record all stored codes and freeze-frame data; note related body or communication codes
  • Check battery state-of-charge and charging system voltage (engine running and cranking)
  • Visually inspect satellite antenna and sliding roof wiring, connectors and grounds for corrosion, damage or water ingress
  • Inspect sliding roof tracks, rollers and mechanism for binding or obstruction
  • Check fuses and relays for roof and antenna circuits
  • Scan for CAN/LIN bus errors and verify antenna module/BCM communications

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage (static and under roof motor load)
  • Sliding roof motor current (amps) while operating
  • Roof position / limit switch signals and motor control outputs from BCM
  • CAN/LIN messages between satellite antenna module and BCM (signal presence/IDs)
  • Antenna module supply voltage and ground continuity
  • Resistance/continuity of antenna and roof harness circuits

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all DTCs and freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool; note any related codes (BCM, antenna, CAN errors).
  2. Verify battery/resting voltage and battery condition; ensure charging system is within spec. Recharge or replace battery if required.
  3. Perform a visual inspection of antenna and sliding roof wiring, connectors and earth points; repair any corrosion, damage or loose connections.
  4. Operate the sliding roof while monitoring battery voltage and motor current. If motor current is excessive or voltage drops significantly, suspect mechanical binding or high electrical load.
  5. Manually check roof tracks and mechanism for binding, debris or worn components; lubricate and repair mechanical faults as needed.
  6. Isolate the satellite antenna circuit (disconnect connector) and re-check roof operation and codes. If roof returns to normal speed and code does not reappear, focus on antenna circuit/grounds.
  7. Check antenna module supply and ground continuity back to BCM; repair any wiring faults. Confirm CAN/LIN bus integrity and termination.
  8. If wiring and mechanical systems are good, consider antenna module or BCM as possible fault. Check for software updates or known faults from Technical Service Bulletins before module replacement.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform repeatability test: operate roof multiple cycles and road-load test to ensure fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Poor or corroded ground or power connection shared with sliding roof circuit
  • Damaged wiring or connector to the satellite antenna causing a fault reported by BCM
  • Mechanical binding or high load on sliding roof motor (motor current limiting reduces speed)
  • Low system voltage under load (battery/charging issue)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
B1A89 — Satellite antenna related fault recorded. Sliding roof operation slow; body control module has logged a communication/electrical issue. Inspection of antenna circuit, power/grounds, wiring and roof drive recommended.
