Causes

  • Defective radio/tuner module (internal fault)
  • Damaged or disconnected antenna/coaxial cable
  • Failed antenna amplifier (power or internal)
  • Corroded/poor antenna or head unit connectors
  • Loss of power or ground to the audio unit or active aerial
  • Faulty wiring or short in antenna feed/return

Symptoms

  • Radio frequency scanning/search fails or stops
  • No AM/FM reception or very weak reception
  • Audio unit displays tuner/antenna error or cannot find stations
  • Intermittent radio reception or frequent static and dropouts
  • DTC stored and may reappear after clearing
  • Possible loss of audio from radio source (other sources like Bluetooth may be unaffected)

What to check

  • Read and record all stored codes and freeze frame data from infotainment and body modules
  • Attempt to reproduce: perform frequency scan and note behavior
  • Visual inspection of antenna mast, aerial base, and coax for damage/corrosion
  • Check head unit fuses and interior power/ground at the radio connector
  • Inspect antenna connector at the radio for persistence of corrosion or looseness
  • Measure continuity and resistance of antenna coax (expect around 50 ohms; open/short indicates fault)

Signal parameters

  • Antenna feed voltage (active aerial): ~12 V when radio on
  • Antenna coax impedance (typical): ~50 ohms (continuity present, not open)
  • RF signal level at tuner: usable > ~-80 dBm (manufacturer specific)
  • Head unit power supply: battery voltage ~11–14.5 V at plugin with radio on
  • Ground continuity: low ohms to chassis ground from head unit
  • CAN/MOST communication: module present and responding on bus (no timeouts)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read all stored DTCs: note any related body or network communication codes (U0xxx, B1B3x).
  2. Reproduce the issue by attempting a frequency scan; record symptoms and any error messages.
  3. Visually inspect external antenna, mast and connectors for corrosion, damage or loose mount.
  4. Remove trim as needed and inspect antenna coax at the head unit: check connector seating and condition.
  5. Check fuses for radio and any active antenna amplifier; verify battery voltage at the head unit supply pin and good ground at chassis.
  6. With radio on, measure the antenna feed wire for presence of ~12 V if an active aerial is fitted; if no voltage, trace back to relay/supply/BCM.
  7. Measure antenna coax continuity and check for short to chassis; replace or repair damaged coax/connectors.
  8. If antenna and wiring are good, use scan tool to verify the tuner module responds on the network; check for software updates or known faults.
  9. If tuner module is unresponsive or internal fault suspected, consider swapping with a known-good unit (or bench test tuner) before replacement.
  10. Clear codes and retest after repairs; confirm proper frequency scanning operation and that code does not return.
  11. If intermittent or after-market components present, consider replacement of antenna amplifier or head unit per manufacturer guidance.

Likely causes

  • Antenna coax disconnected or shorted
  • Antenna amplifier (powered aerial) not receiving 12V feed
  • Corroded connector at antenna or head unit
  • Faulty radio tuner module inside the head unit
  • Head unit software requiring reflash or reset

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Receiver frequency scanning fault — tuner failed to complete or report valid station scan. Check antenna, power/ground, communications and tuner module.
