Causes

  • Failed or degraded right front external sensor
  • Damaged/shorted/open wiring harness to the sensor
  • Corroded or loose connector or pin
  • Water ingress or contamination of the sensor or connector
  • Poor sensor alignment or physical impact damage
  • Faulty control module or module software/firmware bug

Symptoms

  • Instrument cluster warning or message indicating sensor fault
  • Related system reduced or disabled (e.g., parking/assist, ADAS features that use the sensor)
  • Intermittent faults that appear with moisture, temperature changes, or vibration
  • Possible incorrect or missing sensor readings reported by diagnostic tool

What to check

  • Read and record all stored fault codes and freeze-frame data with a capable diagnostic scanner
  • Check vehicle service history and Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for related issues or software updates
  • Visually inspect the right front external sensor, mounting and surrounding area for damage, dirt or water ingress
  • Inspect the sensor connector for corrosion, bent pins, moisture, or loose locking tabs
  • Check harness continuity, short to battery/ground, and resistance between sensor and module
  • Perform wiggle test on harness and connector while monitoring live data or DTCs for intermittent changes

Signal parameters

  • Reference/supply voltage to sensor (typical automotive sensors: ~5V or switched 12V)
  • Signal output range (analogue sensors commonly 0.1–4.9 V; exact range depends on sensor type)
  • Resistance or impedance (if applicable) — compare to OEM specification
  • CAN/LIN message presence and frequency if sensor communicates over bus (check for expected message IDs and message rate)
  • Ground continuity and low resistance to chassis ground

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect factory-level or OEM-capable scan tool. Record freeze-frame data and all related faults. Note if other sensors/modules report issues.
  2. Check for Technical Service Bulletins or software updates affecting the sensor or associated module.
  3. Visually inspect sensor assembly and mounting for damage, fouling, or water ingress. Clean and dry the area if contamination is present.
  4. Disconnect sensor connector, inspect pins for corrosion or damage, clean with appropriate electrical contact cleaner and reseat; then clear codes and test drive to see if fault returns.
  5. With connector connected, backprobe the supply, ground and signal circuits. Verify reference voltage, ground continuity and appropriate signal behavior (compare to OEM spec or to the opposite-side sensor if available).
  6. Perform wiggle test on harness and connector while monitoring live data or DTCs to identify intermittent faults.
  7. If wiring or connector faults are found, repair or replace damaged wiring/connector and retest.
  8. If wiring is good and signal/specs are out of range, replace the sensor and perform any required calibration or module initialization per manufacturer procedure.
  9. If problem persists after sensor replacement and wiring checks, investigate the receiving control module (check for software updates, perform module diagnostics or replace module if indicated)

Likely causes

  • Sensor connector corroded or water-damaged (common on exterior sensors)
  • Broken or chafed wiring between sensor and controller due to road debris or pinch
  • Sensor internal failure from impact or age
  • Improper installation or missing sensor calibration after replacement

Fault status

⚠️ Status
