Causes

  • Damaged or faulty right rear external sensor
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector at the sensor
  • Broken, shorted or open wiring in the sensor harness
  • Water ingress or contamination of sensor or connector
  • Faulty body control module (BCM) or sensor interface module
  • Software, calibration or configuration error

Symptoms

  • Park assist / parking aid warnings or disabled for rear sensors
  • Audible buzzer or messages about sensor fault displayed on dash
  • Blind spot / cross traffic or rear assist features degraded or unavailable (if integrated)
  • Intermittent or constant fault lamp or message
  • Incorrect distance/obstacle readings from right rear sensor

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and full fault list with a capable diagnostic tool and note status (active/confirmed/stored)
  • Visually inspect the right rear sensor, mounting and surrounding area for damage or contamination
  • Inspect the sensor connector for corrosion, bent pins or water ingress and verify it is fully seated
  • Check wiring harness for obvious damage, chafing or repairs between the sensor and control module
  • Monitor live data for the sensor with a scan tool while exercising the sensor (reverse/park assist)
  • Measure supply and signal voltages at the sensor connector with key on/engine off and during activation

Signal parameters

  • Supply: typically vehicle battery voltage present at sensor supply terminal (~12 V nominal) with ignition on
  • Signal: sensor return or data line typically shows pulsed or variable voltage; expected idle ~0–5 V depending on sensor type
  • Ground: continuity to vehicle chassis ground should be near 0 Ω
  • Resistance: disconnected sensor terminal to ground may show open/OL on some sensor types; consult service manual for exact values
  • Communication buses (if digital): CAN or LIN messages present and valid timing when sensor is active

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a multi-brand diagnostic tool and read / record all related codes and live data for the parking/rear sensor control module.
  2. Note whether the code is active or intermittent. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce the fault by exercising the system (shift into reverse, simulate obstacles).
  3. Visually inspect right rear sensor and connector; clean connector and sensor face as necessary.
  4. Backprobe the sensor connector: verify battery/ignition supply, ground continuity and signal line behavior against expected parameters with ignition on and during sensor operation.
  5. Wiggle test the wiring harness while monitoring live data to find intermittent opens/shorts.
  6. If supply/ground OK but signal abnormal, swap the right rear sensor with a known-good sensor from another corner (if identical) or bench-test the suspect sensor to confirm failure.
  7. If sensor swap fixes the code, replace the faulty sensor and retest. If swapping does not help, trace and repair wiring or connectors between sensor and module.
  8. If wiring and sensor check good, inspect and test the controlling module and related communication buses. Reprogram or update module software if a known software issue exists.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform any required relearn/calibration procedure as specified by the manufacturer. Verify system operation and absence of reoccurring codes.

Likely causes

  • Connector corrosion or poor contact at right rear sensor
  • Sensor element failed (internal electronics)
  • Wiring chafed or pinched causing intermittent open/short
  • Sensor contaminated with road grime, ice or moisture

Fault status

⚠️ Status
