Causes

  • Dead or weak key battery (remote functions may fail)
  • Damaged or non-programmed transponder in the key/fob
  • Faulty key fob electronics (RF circuit)
  • Antenna ring/reader (near ignition) fault or poor connection
  • Immobiliser module, Body Control Module (BCM) or engine ECU software/firmware fault
  • CAN/LIN communication errors between immobiliser and other modules

Symptoms

  • Engine will not crank or start when using affected key
  • Security/immobiliser warning lamp or dash message (e.g., “Key deactivated” or “Key not recognised”)
  • Remote locking/unlocking may not work for that key
  • Other keys may work normally (if issue limited to one key)
  • Intermittent starting or failure only under certain conditions

What to check

  • Attempt start with a known-good/spare key to confirm key-specific fault
  • Check instrument cluster for security/immobiliser warning messages and lamp behaviour
  • Verify key battery voltage and replace battery if low; confirm remote functions operate
  • Use diagnostic tool to read B1C30 plus any related immobiliser/BCM/ECU codes and freeze frame data
  • Inspect antenna ring/reader connectors and wiring at the steering column for corrosion, damage or looseness
  • Check power and ground fuses for immobiliser/BCM and related modules

Signal parameters

  • Transponder UID present/absent in immobiliser module log
  • RF signal strength / remote key telemetry (manufacturer-specific units)
  • Antenna ring supply voltage (approx. battery voltage ~11–14 V when key present)
  • Antenna ring resistance/continuity (ohms, compare to spec)
  • Immobiliser status message on CAN (IMMO_AUTHORIZED = true/false)
  • Number of stored keys in immobiliser memory (count)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm the complaint and capture DTCs and freeze frame with a diagnostic scanner. Note which key was used when code set.
  2. Try to start the vehicle with a different known-good key. If other key works, focus on the suspect key (battery, transponder, fob).
  3. Check and if necessary replace the suspect key battery; verify remote functions and re-check recognition.
  4. With diagnostic tool, read immobiliser/BCM logs: verify the transponder UID for the suspect key and whether it is listed as active or deactivated.
  5. Inspect antenna ring/reader and wiring at the steering column: check connectors, continuity and supply/ground voltages. Repair any damaged wiring or loose connectors.
  6. Check CAN/LIN communications: confirm immobiliser, BCM and engine ECU are present on network and no bus errors. Repair network faults first.
  7. If the key is not programmed or flagged as deactivated, attempt to reprogram or enroll the key using manufacturer procedures. Follow key coding/security procedures exactly (special tools and PIN/security code may be required).
  8. If reprogramming fails and antenna/wiring and CAN are good, consider replacing the antenna ring, key, or immobiliser/BCM as directed by test results. Use only manufacturer-approved parts and programming steps.
  9. After repairs/programming, clear DTCs and retest with all vehicle keys. Verify correct operation of start/stop, remote functions and that code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Weak or expired key battery (easy to verify)
  • Key transponder damaged or not programmed to this vehicle (common)
  • Antenna ring/reader fault or loose connector at steering column
  • Immobiliser/BCM not recognising key due to software/firmware or stored key table corruption
  • Intermittent CAN communications preventing authorisation

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Deactivation Key — immobiliser has marked the key as deactivated or the key/transponder cannot be recognised; engine start may be inhibited.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
