Front right door module LIN bus communication fault

Causes

  • Poor connector contact at the front right door module or in-line splice
  • Damaged, pinched, or corroded LIN bus wiring between door and body harness
  • Short to battery or ground on the LIN bus
  • Failed front right door control module (FR door module)
  • Faulty ground or supply (VBATT) to the door module
  • Faulty LIN master or another module pulling the bus low/high

Symptoms

  • Front right door features inoperative or intermittent (locks, mirror, window, courtesy light)
  • Diagnostic scanner shows LIN communication fault for front right door module
  • Other vehicle modules report related communication errors or dropouts
  • Interior message or warning lamp related to door electronics
  • Unusual behavior tied to door events (doors not recognized when opened/closed)

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending DTCs from all modules; note related communication codes
  • Check vehicle battery voltage and charging system before diagnostics (>=12.4 V at rest recommended)
  • Visually inspect front right door module connector for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture
  • Inspect door harness through hinge area for chafing, broken wires, or crushed sections
  • Backprobe LIN bus pin and measure with scanner/oscilloscope while exercising door functions
  • Perform wiggle test on door harness and connectors while monitoring LIN messages

Signal parameters

  • LIN bus voltage idle level (expected idle ~VBATT or pulled level per OEM spec)
  • LIN message IDs/packets from front right door module (presence and frequency)
  • Message timing/periodicity for door-related frames (ms between messages)
  • Voltage at module VBATT supply pin and ground pin (with key on and during operation)
  • Wake/sleep line state for door module if separate
  • Resistance between LIN bus and ground or battery (check for shorts)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve DTCs from all control modules and record freeze-frame data and related codes.
  2. Check battery voltage and charging system. Low voltage can cause communication faults.
  3. Visually inspect the front right door module connector and the door-harness through the hinge for damage, corrosion, or water ingress.
  4. With a scan tool, attempt to communicate with the front right door module. Note whether the module responds, is intermittently present, or not present.
  5. Backprobe the LIN bus pin at the door module connector. With a scope or CAN/LIN capable tool, verify LIN waveform and message activity while operating door functions (lock/unlock, window, mirror). Look for missing frames, noise, or a stuck level.
  6. Perform a wiggle test on the door harness and connector while monitoring bus activity to reproduce intermittent faults.
  7. Measure module supply (VBATT) and ground for correct voltages and low resistance to chassis ground. Repair any poor power/ground before replacing modules.
  8. Check for short or open on the LIN wire: measure continuity from the module pin to the next LIN node or splice and resistance to ground/battery to detect unintended shorts.
  9. If wiring and connectors are good and supply/ground are correct, check for software updates or reprogramming notes for the module; then consider replacing the front right door module.
  10. After repair, clear DTCs and verify vehicle communication and door functions under normal use (operate doors multiple cycles). Re-scan all modules to confirm no related codes remain.

Likely causes

  • Loose/corroded connector at the front right door module
  • Broken or high-resistance wire in the door harness (hinge area)
  • Defective front right door module
  • Low supply voltage or poor ground at the door module

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Communication fault detected on LIN network for front right door module. Module not responding or LIN message errors recorded (may be intermittent or permanent).
