Causes

  • Blown fuse for interior lamps circuit
  • Failed interior lamp (bulb or LED module)
  • Open or shorted wiring between BCM and lamps
  • Corroded or loose connector at lamp or BCM
  • Faulty switch or dimmer module
  • BCM output driver fault or software issue

Symptoms

  • One or more interior lamps do not illuminate
  • Interior lamps flicker or cycle on/off intermittently
  • Interior lamps stuck on or do not respond to switches
  • Battery drain with vehicle off if lamp stuck on
  • Related dash messages or stored BCM faults

What to check

  • Scan vehicle with a capable diagnostic tool; read and record all BCM codes and freeze frame data
  • Check interior lamp fuse(s) for continuity and proper rating
  • Visually inspect lamp assemblies, sockets and connectors for corrosion, damage or water ingress
  • Operate lamp switch(s) while observing lamp behavior and scanning live data
  • Measure supply voltage at lamp connector with switch ON and OFF
  • Check ground continuity from lamp ground to vehicle chassis/BCM

Signal parameters

  • Lamp supply voltage: ~12 V with lamp switch ON, ~0 V (or battery voltage through switch open depending on design) with OFF
  • Ground: near 0 V relative to chassis when measured at connector
  • Continuity: low resistance circuit expected between lamp and BCM (
  • Current: incandescent lamps typically draw hundreds of milliamps; LED modules draw much less (tens to low hundreds mA)
  • BCM output switching may be saturated or PWM for dimming — waveform present when dimmer active

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame and full fault list with diagnostic scanner. Note any related codes or network communication errors.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of lamps, sockets, connectors and fuse(s). Replace blown fuses only after verifying cause.
  3. With ignition ON, measure battery voltage at lamp supply pin at the connector while operating the interior lamp switch/dimmer. Confirm voltage changes as expected.
  4. Measure voltage at lamp ground pin and check continuity to chassis ground; repair any high-resistance grounds.
  5. If supply and ground are correct but lamp does not illuminate, remove lamp and bench-test the lamp module or bulb (replace if faulty).
  6. If lamp still not powered, perform continuity check from BCM pin to lamp connector; wiggle harness in suspect areas (door hinges, roof liner) to see if fault is intermittent.
  7. If wiring and lamp are good, test BCM output using an oscilloscope or multimeter (observe PWM if dimming). Compare to specification. Consider swapping known-good BCM connector outputs if available and supported.
  8. Repair or replace faulty wiring, connectors or lamp module as required. Clear codes and re-test function and for return of fault after multiple cycles.
  9. If fault persists and wiring/lamp are confirmed good, consult vehicle-specific service information for BCM diagnostic procedures and consider BCM reprogramming or replacement following proper module programming steps.

Likely causes

  • Blown fuse or poor fuse contact
  • Failed lamp (burned filament or failed LED module)
  • Loose/corroded connector at lamp or ground
  • Broken/open wire in harness near door hinge or lamp
  • BCM driver fault (less common)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
