Backlight incandescent output - circuit failure

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Burnt or failed incandescent bulb(s)
  • Open circuit in wiring (broken wire, disconnected connector)
  • Short to ground or short to battery in the backlight circuit
  • Blown fuse or fusible link for lighting/backlight circuit
  • Corroded or damaged connector/pin at lamp or module
  • Poor or high-resistance ground

Symptoms

  • One or more interior or instrument backlights do not illuminate
  • Backlight may be dim, flicker, or vary with engine speed
  • Related dash or module warning messages or lamp icons
  • Multiple lighting circuits affected if fuse or module output has failed

What to check

  • Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data from all modules
  • Visually inspect bulbs, lamp holders and associated connectors for damage or corrosion
  • Check relevant fuses and fusible links for continuity
  • Inspect wiring harness for signs of chafe, burns, or pinched wires
  • Check grounds for tightness and corrosion
  • Confirm whether the fault is present with key-on and engine running

Signal parameters

  • Nominal supply voltage: ~12 V (key ON/engine OFF) to ~13.5–14.5 V (engine running)
  • Expected lamp connector voltage to supply side: battery voltage (12 V) when switched ON
  • Typical incandescent lamp current draw: often 0.1–2 A per lamp depending on lamp rating
  • If controlled by BCM/PWM, expect a switched ground or PWM waveform; duty cycle varies with dimmer setting
  • Open-circuit: infinite resistance between lamp terminals; short-to-ground: near 0 Ω to chassis

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all stored and pending codes from all modules; note any related communication or power codes.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the affected lamp(s), lamp holders, connectors, wiring harness and related fuses for obvious damage or corrosion.
  3. With lamp removed, measure bulb filament continuity with a multimeter. Replace any failed bulbs.
  4. Check fuses and fusible links for the lighting/backlight circuit; replace if blown and investigate cause of fuse failure.
  5. With connector disconnected, measure supply voltage at the lamp power feed with respect to chassis ground (key ON). Verify expected battery voltage is present when the circuit should be on.
  6. Measure resistance from the lamp ground pin to chassis ground to confirm a good ground connection.
  7. If the circuit is PWM/switched by the BCM, use a scope or multimeter to check the output driver for switching/PWM and measure duty cycle with dimmer control changes.
  8. Back-probe the connector and check for short to ground or short to battery by measuring resistance between the feed and chassis ground and between feed and battery positive (with power removed).
  9. Wiggle test wiring and connectors while observing lamp behavior or measuring circuit to locate intermittent wiring faults.
  10. If wiring and bulbs check good, interrogate the BCM/instrument pack: verify power/grounds to module and check for software updates or module faults. Consider module replacement only after wiring and external components are confirmed good.
  11. Clear codes, operate lights through full range (different dimmer settings, ignition states) and confirm no return of the fault.

Likely causes

  • Failed incandescent lamp or lamps
  • Loose/disconnected connector at lamp or instrument cluster
  • Corroded pin or water ingress in connector
  • Open fuse or fusible link
  • Short to ground caused by chafed wiring
  • Faulty output transistor or PWM driver in BCM/instrument pack

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Backlight incandescent output circuit malfunction detected — possible open, short, or abnormal driver signal on the incandescent backlight circuit. Inspection of lamps, wiring, fuses, grounds and module outputs recommended.
