LAND ROVER B — Body

Remote key Failure in keyless entry communication

Brand: LAND ROVER
Type: B — Body

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Weak or dead key fob battery
  • Damaged or non‑functional key fob (internal electronics)
  • Faulty keyless entry antenna/receiver module (RFA/RKE)
  • Poor or corroded connectors, wiring damage or poor ground to the module
  • Software/firmware mismatch or corrupted module memory
  • CAN/LIN network communication errors between modules

Symptoms

  • Keyless entry/unlock/lock does not work or is intermittent
  • Vehicle displays 'Key Not Detected' or similar warning
  • Unable to start vehicle using keyless start
  • Intermittent locking/unlocking, or range greatly reduced
  • One key works while another does not

What to check

  • Retrieve all stored DTCs with a diagnostic scan tool and note related network codes
  • Verify correct vehicle battery voltage (approx. 11–14 V) and check fuses for RFA/RKE
  • Check and measure key fob battery voltage (replace if below ~2.5–3.0 V)
  • Try a known‑good spare key fob and test operation
  • Inspect antenna/receiver connectors and wiring for corrosion, damage or poor grounds
  • Check module power and ground circuits at the receiver/module

Signal parameters

  • Key fob battery voltage (typical CR2032 ≈ 3.0 V nominal)
  • Vehicle supply voltage to receiver/module (≈ 11–14 V)
  • RF carrier frequency depends on region (commonly 315, 433 or 868 MHz)
  • Received signal strength indicator (RSSI) or packet error rate where available
  • Key unique ID and rolling code sequence validity
  • CAN/LIN message presence and error counters for the keyless module

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic tool, read and record DTCs and live data from keyless/immobiliser/RFA modules.
  2. Confirm vehicle battery and fuses are good. Clear codes, attempt to reproduce fault.
  3. Check key fob battery voltage; replace battery and retest with each key. Verify spare key operation.
  4. Inspect receiver/antenna module connectors, wiring harness and ground points; repair any damage or corrosion.
  5. Check module power supply and ground at the receiver; verify CAN/LIN communication with the module using the diagnostic tool.
  6. If available, view RF receive metrics (RSSI/packet errors) while operating key fob at different distances/angles.
  7. Attempt a re‑learn/programming procedure for the suspect key using manufacturer procedures or diagnostic tool.
  8. If problem persists and module shows internal fault or no communication, consult technical service bulletins and consider software update or replacement of the receiver/module.
  9. After repairs, clear DTCs, test all keys over range and repeat diagnostic scan to confirm no reoccurrence.

Likely causes

  • Key fob battery is dead or very weak
  • Single key fob failed (try spare key)
  • Receiver/antenna module fault or connector issue
  • Module lost communication on vehicle network

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Remote key communication fault: keyless entry receiver or key fob not communicating reliably. Check keys, battery, wiring and receiver.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.5 hours
