LAND ROVER B — Body

Failure in the micro switch of the steering column control module

Type: B — Body

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Failed or mechanically broken micro-switch inside steering column
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector/pins at the steering column
  • Chafed or broken wiring harness (open, short to ground or short to battery)
  • Water ingress or contamination inside steering column
  • Poor or missing ground or power to the SCCM
  • Faulty steering column control module (internal electronics)

Symptoms

  • One or more steering column switches/stalks (e.g., cruise, wipers, lights) unresponsive or intermittent
  • Stored B2170 fault code and possibly related codes
  • Warning lights or messages related to steering wheel controls or systems that use those inputs
  • Unpredictable behaviour of associated systems (e.g., cruise control, audio controls)
  • Possible inability to calibrate or perform steering angle-related functions after repairs

What to check

  • Read stored codes and freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool; note occurrence and pattern
  • Check for any Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to B2170 for the vehicle and year
  • Visual inspection of steering column covers, connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion or moisture
  • Inspect connector pins at SCCM for bent, pushed-out or corroded terminals
  • Check SCCM power and ground circuits with a multimeter
  • Probe the micro-switch circuit while actuating it to verify open/closed behaviour and look for intermittent operation

Signal parameters

  • Micro-switch continuity: closed ≈ near 0 Ω; open = OL (infinite) — verify with DMM
  • Signal line with module present: logic-level signal typically 0–5 V depending on design; expect a stable change when switch actuated
  • Supply voltage to SCCM: battery voltage ≈ 12 V (with ignition ON) on the module power pin(s)
  • Ground:
  • Intermittent spikes or floating voltages indicate wiring/connectivity issues

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a scan tool to confirm B2170 is current or intermittent and record any concurrent codes. Check freeze frame or last run data.
  2. Inspect steering column covers and related connectors for damage, moisture or foreign debris. Remove covers as required for access.
  3. Visually inspect the micro-switch connector and pins. Look for corrosion, bent pins, or pushed-out terminals.
  4. With ignition ON, check supply voltage and ground at the SCCM connector. Verify expected battery voltage on power pin(s) and good ground continuity.
  5. Backprobe the micro-switch signal circuit. Operate the switch manually and observe continuity with a DMM and signal state on scan tool. Note open/closed behaviour and any intermittent changes while wiggling wiring.
  6. If open or short is present, trace the wiring back from the switch to the SCCM. Repair any chafed, pinched or damaged wires and repair corroded connectors (replace terminals or connector as required).
  7. If the wiring and connector test good, perform a bench test or substitution of a known-good micro-switch (if serviceable) or SCCM if permitted by procedures.
  8. After repair or replacement, clear codes and perform functional checks. Cycle ignition and operate associated switches to confirm fault does not return.
  9. If steering angle sensors or related systems were disturbed (airbag/steering wheel removal), follow manufacturer procedure for calibration and perform a road test to verify.
  10. If intermittent faults persist with correct wiring and good module power/ground, consult manufacturer diagnostics for SCCM replacement or software reflash.

Likely causes

  • Damaged connector or corroded pins at the steering column
  • Wiring harness chafe or intermittent break at steering column flex point
  • Mechanical failure of the micro-switch (wear or broken actuator)
  • Water or debris contamination around the switch
  • Failed SCCM if power/ground and wiring check good
