Causes

  • Damaged or disconnected GPS antenna
  • Corroded or bent antenna connector pins
  • Broken or shorted antenna coaxial cable
  • Water ingress at antenna or connector
  • Failed/weak active antenna (internal amplifier failure)
  • Faulty navigation/head unit or body control module

Symptoms

  • No GPS fix or very slow fix acquisition
  • Navigation system showing no satellite signal
  • Location-based services, SOS or connected services unavailable
  • DTC B2204 stored and possibly other related GPS/Nav codes
  • Intermittent GPS reception or position jumps
  • Possible loss of features that rely on accurate GPS data

What to check

  • Read and record all related DTCs and freeze-frame data with a diagnostic scanner
  • Verify software/firmware levels and applicable TSBs for NAV/telematics
  • Visual inspection of roof antenna, antenna mast and connectors for damage or corrosion
  • Inspect coax routing for pinch points, chafing or water entry (check sunroof seals, antenna base)
  • Check connector pins for corrosion, bent or pushed-back center pin
  • Measure antenna coax continuity and shorts (center conductor to shield) with a multimeter

Signal parameters

  • Antenna supply voltage (if active antenna present) — typical ~3–5 V (check vehicle spec)
  • Coax continuity and shield integrity (ohms)
  • Antenna impedance ~50 Ω (RF characteristic — check with antenna tester if available)
  • Received satellite count and SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) reported by GPS receiver
  • GPS fix state (No Fix / 2D / 3D) and time-to-first-fix (TTFF)
  • Infotainment/Body module CAN messages indicating GPS status

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect diagnostic scan tool, record all codes and freeze data. Note navigation/GPS status (satellite count, fix state).
  2. Clear DTCs. Recycle ignition and see if B2204 returns immediately or after system attempt to acquire satellites.
  3. Perform visual inspection of the external antenna, roof area, antenna base and wiring for physical damage or water ingress.
  4. Remove antenna connector and inspect pins for corrosion or damage; clean and re-fit securely.
  5. Check coax continuity: measure center conductor continuity to module and check for short to shield. Repair or replace damaged coax.
  6. If antenna is an active type, with ignition ON measure supply voltage at antenna connector per manufacturer spec. Replace antenna if supply present but no signal.
  7. If possible, substitute a known-good antenna to confirm whether the antenna or the module is at fault.
  8. If antenna and wiring test good, inspect module RF input and related connectors; check for module communication errors on CAN bus.
  9. Check for applicable software updates, recalibration or known service bulletins and apply if required.
  10. After repairs, clear codes, verify GPS acquires satellites and confirm restoration of affected functions. Road/test as required to confirm.

Likely causes

  • Open or short in the antenna coax (most common)
  • Corroded/loose antenna connector at roof or module
  • Failed active GPS antenna requiring replacement
  • Faulty NAV/head unit or its RF input circuit
  • Software or configuration error in telematics/navigation module

Fault status

⚠️ Status
B2204 — GPS antenna circuit fault detected by the vehicle module; may cause loss of satellite reception and degraded navigation/connected services.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5 - 2.0 hours
