Causes

  • Faulty seat position sensor (potentiometer or Hall sensor)
  • Seat motor or motor gearbox failure
  • Mechanical binding or obstruction in seat track
  • Damaged wiring harness or poor connector contact
  • Insufficient supply voltage or poor ground
  • Faulty body/seat control module or software/calibration error

Symptoms

  • Seat stops before reaching end of travel or moves beyond expected stop
  • Seat will not move or moves intermittently
  • Unusual noise from seat motor (grinding, clicking)
  • Driver/occupant seat position warning or DTC stored
  • Inability to save or recall memory positions

What to check

  • Scan vehicle and read freeze frame and related seat codes; record live data
  • Visually inspect seat tracks, motor, connectors and wiring for damage or foreign objects
  • Operate seat while observing movement and listening for abnormal noises
  • Check fuses and supply voltage at the seat motor connector (key on, command active)
  • Measure resistance of motor windings and continuity of feedback sensor wiring
  • Backprobe position sensor output while moving the seat to confirm expected signal range

Signal parameters

  • Motor supply voltage: ~11–14 V with command active
  • Position sensor (potentiometer/Hall) feedback: typically 0.5–4.5 V (varies by design)
  • Motor current draw: nominal low current when free-running, elevated if stalled (amps vary by motor)
  • Control signal: may be direct 12 V on/off or PWM drive (frequency varies by manufacturer)
  • Continuity: low ohms across motor terminals; feedback circuit continuity to control module

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect scan tool, read B2309 and any related codes; note freeze frame and live data for position feedback.
  2. Attempt seat operation while observing live feedback. Confirm whether feedback value reaches expected end-of-travel or goes out-of-range.
  3. Visually inspect for obstructions, trapped items, or bent tracks; move seat manually (with battery disconnected) to check for free movement.
  4. With ignition on and seat command active, measure voltage at motor power and ground pins. Verify ~12 V is present when commanded and a good ground.
  5. Backprobe feedback sensor/wiper and sweep seat; verify smooth voltage change across entire travel and that it stays within manufacturer expected range.
  6. Measure motor winding resistance and check current draw during operation. Excessive current indicates binding or failing motor/gearbox.
  7. Inspect connectors for corrosion, pin damage or poor contacts; repair as required and re-test.
  8. If wiring and mechanical checks pass but feedback remains out-of-range, consider replacing the position sensor or motor assembly.
  9. If motor or sensor replaced, clear codes and perform any required seat calibration/relearn procedure per manufacturer instructions.
  10. If fault persists after component replacement and wiring checks, test/replace seat control module or consult manufacturer service literature for module tests.

Likely causes

  • Worn or failed position sensor (feedback shows out-of-range voltage)
  • Gear tooth strip, seized gearbox, or motor drawing excessive current
  • Foreign object or bent track preventing full travel
  • Corroded or loose connector at motor or module
  • Short to supply or open circuit in feedback signal wire
  • Module lost calibration after service or battery disconnect

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Seat motor out of range — the seat position feedback signal indicates travel beyond expected limits or an invalid value. Possible motor, feedback sensor, wiring, mechanical obstruction, or control module issue.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
