Causes

  • Open or high-resistance wiring in the pretensioner circuit
  • Short to battery (12V) on the pretensioner wiring
  • Damaged or corroded pretensioner connector
  • Faulty seat belt pretensioner (squib)
  • Faulty SRS (airbag) control module or module connector
  • Poor ground or chassis connection in SRS circuit

Symptoms

  • SRS / airbag warning lamp illuminated on instrument panel
  • Seat belt pretensioner may be inhibited and not function in a crash
  • Stored B2356 (and possibly other SRS codes) in diagnostic tool
  • Possible intermittent fault if wiring moves with seat position

What to check

  • Retrieve and record all SRS codes with a compatible scan tool (snapshot data if available)
  • Visually inspect the pretensioner wiring and connector at the affected front seat for damage, corrosion or pin distortion
  • Check for aftermarket devices or recent seat work that could have disturbed wiring
  • Measure voltage at the pretensioner connector with ignition ON and OFF (observe SRS safety procedures)
  • Measure continuity/resistance between pretensioner connector and SRS control module
  • Inspect ground connections for integrity and corrosion

Signal parameters

  • With ignition ON, the pretensioner circuit may be supplied intermittently by the SRS module; presence of battery voltage on the squib feed when it should be inactive suggests a short to battery
  • A healthy squib coil normally presents a low resistance value (typically low ohms); an open (infinite) reading indicates broken circuit
  • Continuity between pretensioner and SRS module should be good; high resistance suggests corrosion or partial open
  • Any voltage present on the squib circuit with ignition OFF is abnormal

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: follow manufacturer SRS safety procedures. Disconnect battery and wait the specified time before touching SRS circuits or components.
  2. Use a scan tool to clear codes and see if B2356 returns; note any related SRS codes.
  3. Perform a detailed visual inspection of the seat area harness, connectors, and anchor points for chafing, pin damage, corrosion or repairs.
  4. With battery reconnected and following safety guidance, measure voltage at the pretensioner connector relative to chassis ground with ignition OFF and ON to detect unexpected battery voltage.
  5. Disconnect the pretensioner connector and measure resistance/continuity between the pretensioner pin(s) and the SRS control module connector to isolate open circuits or shorts to other circuits.
  6. If a short to battery is confirmed, back-probe wiring segments or disconnect connectors progressively to locate the shorted section.
  7. If an open or high resistance is found in the wiring, repair or replace the damaged wiring/connector using approved SRS wiring practices.
  8. If wiring and connectors check good, replace the pretensioner assembly only with manufacturer-specified part and refit per instructions.
  9. After repair, clear codes with a scan tool and perform SRS system checks and power cycles to confirm the fault does not return.
  10. If faults persist and wiring and pretensioner are verified good, consider SRS control module inspection or replacement as a last step (follow vehicle-specific procedures).

Likely causes

  • Chafed harness under the seat contacting 12V feed
  • Bent/dirty/broken pins at pretensioner or airbag module connector
  • Disconnected or broken conductor (open) in pretensioner lead
  • Water ingress/corrosion at seat connector
  • Failed pretensioner squib coil

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Front seat belt pretensioner circuit detected as open or shorted to battery. SRS/airbag warning lamp illuminated and pretensioner function may be disabled until the fault is corrected.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-2.5 hours
