Causes

  • Faulty/failed column adjustment switch (position sensor or potentiometer)
  • Open, shorted or intermittent wiring between switch and control module
  • Corroded or loose connector/terminal at the switch or module
  • Mechanical binding or obstruction preventing full column travel
  • Blown fuse or poor power/ground to the switch or actuator
  • Faulty steering column control module or related module communication error

Symptoms

  • Steering column tilt/telescopic adjustment inoperative or intermittent
  • Column movement stops before full travel or moves unpredictably
  • One or more related warning messages or indicator lamps illuminated
  • Stored DTC(s) related to column adjustment or module communication
  • Possible loss of steering column memory positions

What to check

  • Use a diagnostic scan tool to read B2368, related codes and live data; note freeze‑frame
  • Visually inspect column, switch and harness for damage, corrosion or pinched wiring
  • Check fuse(s) and relays supplying the column adjustment circuit
  • Wiggle test harness and connectors while monitoring live switch/position signal for intermittent changes
  • Measure reference voltage, signal voltage and ground at the switch connector with ignition ON
  • Command column adjustment via diagnostic tool (if available) and observe actuator response and live signal

Signal parameters

  • Position switch typically provides a variable signal (potentiometer or hall sensor) — expected to change smoothly across its travel
  • Typical signal voltage range: ~0–5 V (model dependent); no sudden jumps or open/short indications
  • Reference supply (if present) usually ~5 V and a good ground; check for continuity to chassis ground
  • Diagnostic data may show position values or counts within a defined range — out‑of‑range or erratic values indicate fault

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable diagnostic scanner, read stored/active DTCs and live data. Record conditions when DTC set.
  2. Attempt to reproduce the fault by operating the column and observing live position/switch values. Note any intermittent behavior.
  3. Visually inspect the switch, wiring harness, connectors and column area for damage, corrosion or mechanical obstruction.
  4. Check fuses/relays related to column adjustment circuits; verify power and ground at the switch connector with ignition ON.
  5. With backprobe or multimeter, measure reference, signal and ground at the switch while operating the switch. Expect a smooth, continuous change in signal voltage or resistance.
  6. Perform a wiggle test of the wiring while monitoring the signal to identify intermittent opens/shorts.
  7. Command the column actuator via the scan tool (if supported) to verify motor/actuator operation and whether the switch follows movement correctly.
  8. If wiring and power are good but signal is incorrect or noisy, remove and bench‑test or replace the column adjustment switch assembly.
  9. If switch and wiring are good, check for module software updates, perform module resets and required calibration/teach procedures. Replace module only if bench testing and diagnostics indicate module fault.
  10. After repair or replacement, clear codes, perform any relearn/calibration, and verify normal operation over multiple cycles.

Likely causes

  • Damaged switch or internal wear in the position sensor
  • Wiring harness damage or chafing near the column
  • Connector corrosion or bent pins at the column harness
  • Column actuator/motor failing to reach end stops causing out‑of‑range feedback
  • Module software or calibration error requiring a relearn

Fault status

⚠️ Status
B2368 — Column adjustment switch out of range. The column control module has detected a switch or position signal outside expected limits or inconsistent with actuator movement.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1-3 hours
