Causes

  • Mechanical obstruction or jam in the headrest mechanism
  • Failed or seized headrest motor or gearbox
  • Faulty headrest position switch (down)
  • Damaged wiring or poor connector connection to switch or motor
  • Blown fuse or loss of power to the motor circuit
  • Faulty body/seating control module or module software error

Symptoms

  • Headrest will not lower or moves very slowly
  • Headrest stops before reaching the down position
  • Unusual noise from headrest area (grinding or stalling)
  • Repeated attempts to move the headrest or inability to complete operation
  • Related DTC stored and possible message/warning in vehicle information display

What to check

  • Visually inspect the headrest and surrounding trim for obstructions or foreign objects
  • Operate the headrest and observe behavior; note whether attempt times out consistently
  • Check fuses and power supply for the headrest circuit
  • Inspect connectors and wiring between switch, motor and seat/body control module for corrosion, damage or loose pins
  • Use a diagnostic scan tool to read freeze frame, stored codes and to command the headrest actuator
  • Listen for motor operation when down command is given and note any unusual noises

Signal parameters

  • Headrest down switch: expected change in switch state when pressed (active/inactive as vehicle design)
  • Motor supply: battery voltage present at motor connector while command is active (~vehicle battery voltage)
  • Motor current draw: normal running current vs high current when stalled (expect higher current if jammed)
  • Control module messages: command sent and acknowledgement on vehicle network (CAN) — module should report move start and completion

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Clear the code with a diagnostic tool and attempt to reproduce the fault to confirm it returns.
  2. Visually inspect the headrest mechanism, trim and seat for trapped objects or signs of mechanical damage; remove any obstruction.
  3. Check fuses and relays for the headrest/seat circuit; replace if blown and retest.
  4. With ignition on, operate the down switch while monitoring for motor noise and movement. Note if action times out or stalls.
  5. Using a scan tool, command the headrest down and observe module feedback and any live data (switch state, command, status).
  6. Probe motor connector while commanding down: verify battery voltage at supply pin and proper ground. If no voltage, trace back to switch and module.
  7. Test the down switch for correct continuity/operation (bench or in-situ). Repair/replace if intermittent or failed.
  8. Measure motor current while operating. Excessive current indicates binding or seized motor/gear; no current may indicate open circuit.
  9. If wiring and switches test good, inspect and test the motor/gear assembly. If motor fails bench test or is noisy/seized, replace the motor/actuator or mechanism.
  10. If electrical/mechanical components are good, check seat/body control module connections, update module software if available and consider module replacement only after thorough verification.
  11. After repairs, perform calibration or automatic learn procedure for the headrest if required by manufacturer, clear DTCs and verify proper operation over multiple cycles.

Likely causes

  • Obstruction or mechanical binding in the headrest mechanism
  • Worn or failed headrest motor
  • Intermittent/poor connector or wiring to the down switch or motor
  • Faulty headrest down switch

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Time limit exceeded while lowering headrest support. Inspect headrest mechanism, motor, switch, wiring and control module; repair as required and re-test.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
