Anti-theft horn output - circuit failure

Causes

  • Blown fuse for horn/anti-theft circuit
  • Faulty horn(s) or internal short in horn
  • Open or shorted wiring between BCM and horn (including corroded connectors)
  • Faulty horn relay or driver transistor in BCM
  • Aftermarket alarm or wiring modifications interfering with circuit
  • Faulty Body Control Module (BCM) or immobilizer module

Symptoms

  • Alarm chirp/siren does not use vehicle horn (no horn sound on alarm)
  • Horn does not sound when tested via vehicle controls
  • DTC B2495 stored in BCM or immobilizer module
  • Intermittent horn operation or only works when tapped/wiggled
  • Possible battery drain if circuit shorted

What to check

  • Scan for stored codes and related modules; note freeze-frame data and event count
  • Visually inspect horn(s), wiring, connectors and mounting for damage or corrosion
  • Check horn/anti-theft related fuses and relays for continuity and proper seating
  • Activate alarm/horn output while measuring voltage at horn connector
  • Perform continuity/short-to-ground tests on harness between BCM and horn
  • Disconnect aftermarket alarm components and retest if present

Signal parameters

  • Resting voltage at horn output: approx. 0 V
  • Activated voltage at horn connector: close to battery voltage (approx. 11–14 V)
  • Horn coil/resistance (typical): 1–10 ohms (varies by horn type) — verify manufacturer spec
  • Relay coil resistance (if external): typically 70–140 ohms
  • BCM output driver current: limited — expected pulse/steady drive up to horn current; excessive current suggests short

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all DTCs from BCM and related modules. Clear codes and attempt to re-create the fault to verify repeatability.
  2. Inspect fuses and relays for the horn/anti-theft circuit; replace any blown fuse and retest.
  3. Visually inspect horn(s) and wiring harnesses for damage, pin corrosion, poor ground, or disconnected connectors.
  4. With a helper, activate the alarm/horn output while measuring voltage at the horn connector. If no voltage, move upstream: check relay output and BCM pin voltage when commanded.
  5. If voltage is present at horn connector but the horn does not sound, bench-test the horn by applying battery voltage directly. Replace horn if it fails to operate.
  6. If no activation voltage at the horn but relay clicks, check relay contacts and replace relay if suspect. If relay not present and BCM drives horn directly, test continuity from BCM to horn; check for short to ground/short to supply.
  7. Repair any wiring faults (replace damaged wiring, repair corroded connectors). Use manufacturer wiring diagrams to identify correct pins and colors.
  8. If wiring and horn check good and output still not present, suspect BCM/immobilizer driver fault. Verify with module testing (scope preferred) and consider module programming/replace only after confirming wiring and loads.
  9. After repairs clear codes and perform multiple actuations of alarm/horn to confirm no reoccurrence and restore normal operation.

Likely causes

  • Blown fuse or faulty horn relay
  • Open/poor connection at horn connector (corrosion, broken pin)
  • Short to ground on horn feed or return wiring
  • Failed horn unit (speaker element)
  • BCM driver fault (less common)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Anti‑theft horn output circuit failure detected — horn output not driving as expected. Check fuses, wiring, horn and BCM driver.
