Body Control Module Internal Fault

Causes
- BCM internal hardware failure (processor, memory, voltage regulator)
- Corroded or water-damaged BCM or connectors
- Battery voltage problems or intermittent power supply
- Voltage spikes or electrical transients
- Software corruption or firmware bug
- Poor ground or damaged wiring to BCM
Symptoms
- Multiple body functions inoperative or intermittent (lights, locks, wipers, HVAC, windows)
- Instrument cluster warnings related to body systems
- Erratic or unexpected operation of doors/locks/lights
- Keyless entry, immobilizer, or alarm faults
- CAN bus or communication warnings with other modules
- Vehicle may fail to go to sleep or may have battery drain
What to check
- Retrieve freeze frame and full DTC list with a scan tool; note occurrence/frequency
- Check battery voltage (at rest and cranking) and charging system health
- Inspect BCM connector, pins, and harness for corrosion, water, or damage
- Verify all BCM power and ground circuits for proper continuity and low resistance
- Observe CAN / LIN bus activity with a scan tool; check for lost messages or bus errors
- Check related fuses and fusible links feeding the BCM
Signal parameters
- BCM supply voltage (expected ~9–16 V depending on vehicle state)
- Ignition/wakeup input state (on/off/sleep) as reported by scan tool
- CAN bus Rx/Tx activity for BCM message IDs and error counters
- Communication status flags (timeout, checksum errors) in scan tool data
- Internal watchdog or internal error counters if available in OEM data
Diagnostic algorithm
- Read and record all DTCs and freeze frame data. Note if B2640 is the only code or occurs with others.
- Verify battery state of charge and charging system; ensure stable supply voltage during tests.
- Visually inspect BCM and harness for moisture, corrosion, damaged pins, or aftermarket taps.
- With harness disconnected, measure continuity and resistance of BCM power and ground circuits back to battery and chassis ground.
- Using a capable scan tool, monitor BCM communication on the vehicle bus(s). Check for message timeouts, bus errors, or abnormal voltages.
- Check related fuses and supply voltages at the BCM connector pins with ignition in the required state (key on/engine off).
- If wiring, power, and grounds are good, attempt to clear codes and perform a BCM power-cycle (disconnect battery per manufacturer procedure) then re-scan to see if code returns.
- Check for applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) or software updates. If available, reflash or reprogram BCM per OEM procedure.
- If the code remains after verifying vehicle electrical integrity and applying software updates, consult OEM diagnostic documentation; replacement/programming of the BCM may be required.
- After any repair or module replacement, perform relearn/programming and verify all body functions and that the code does not return.
Likely causes
- Low or unstable battery/charging system voltage
- Loose, corroded or damaged BCM connector or pins
- Failed internal BCM component (e.g., regulator, MCU, flash memory)
- Water intrusion into BCM housing
- Recent jump-start, short, or aftermarket installation that stressed BCM
- Outdated or corrupted BCM software
Fault status
Status
Internal Body Control Module fault detected. Check power/ground, connectors, and communications. Software corruption or failed internal component possible. Reflash or replace BCM if external causes are ruled out.
Repair difficulty: Hard
Diagnostic time: 1.5-4.0 hours
