Causes

  • Loss of valid power supply or poor ground to the module
  • Damaged, corroded or loose connector or wiring (power, ground or data lines)
  • CAN / LIN / vehicle network communication fault (short, open, high error counts)
  • Module internal hardware or firmware/software fault (corrupted calibration, failed components)
  • Interference from aftermarket electronics or improper module replacement
  • Water ingress or physical damage to the module or connector

Symptoms

  • DTC B2656 stored and possibly MIL/BCM warning messages
  • Affected system features inoperative or intermittent (depends on what the module controls)
  • Related communication or network faults reported (other modules showing errors)
  • Module may not respond to diagnostic tool or may show software/serial mismatch

What to check

  • Read all stored DTCs and freeze frame data with a Land Rover–capable scan tool; note related U- and B-codes
  • Check for outstanding software updates or Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) on the specific model/year
  • Visually inspect the module, connector and harness for corrosion, water, damage or pin deformation
  • Check relevant fuses and relays for the module circuit
  • Measure battery voltage with engine off and cranking; verify nominal supply (approx. 11–14 V)
  • Verify ground continuity between module ground and vehicle chassis

Signal parameters

  • Module supply voltage (nominal 11–14 V; present with ignition on/crank as appropriate)
  • Module ground continuity (low resistance to chassis ground, typically
  • CAN bus idle voltages: CAN_H and CAN_L around mid-rail (approx. 2.5 V) and correct differential when dominant
  • CAN/LIN error counters (rx/tx error counts) from diagnostic tool
  • Module presence/response to diagnostic requests (module ID, software part number)
  • Checksum/CRC or internal health flags if reported by the module

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable diagnostic tool and record B2656 plus any related DTCs and freeze-frame data; check module software part numbers and VIN matching.
  2. Inspect the physical condition of the module and harness for corrosion, water ingress, bent pins, or mechanical damage; repair any visible faults.
  3. Verify supply and ground at the module connector with ignition in the required state; repair wiring or fuses if voltages are out of range.
  4. Check CAN/LIN bus integrity: measure idle voltages and inspect for shorts/opens; use an oscilloscope to view waveforms if available and confirm proper differential signals.
  5. If network errors are present, trace the bus to isolate which connector or module introduces errors; disconnect suspect modules one at a time (where safe and manufacturer-approved) to observe changes.
  6. Attempt a soft reset or power-cycle the module via the diagnostic tool; clear codes and test drive to see if the code returns.
  7. If code returns and electrical/network checks are good, perform module reprogramming/firmware update per Land Rover procedures and then retest.
  8. If problem persists after wiring, power and software verification, consider module replacement following OEM diagnostic confirmation; document and retest after repair.
  9. Always re-check for related codes and run full network scan after repair; confirm all systems are functional before returning vehicle to customer.

Likely causes

  • Intermittent or missing power/ground to the versatile disk module
  • Faulty or corroded connector or wiring on the module harness
  • CAN-bus communication error (open/short/high error rate) between the module and gateway
  • Module firmware corruption or internal module hardware failure

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored/intermittent digital communication or internal module error. May be active or historical; further inspection needed to determine cause.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-2.5 hours
