Causes

  • Internal hardware failure inside the BCM (processor, memory, internal power regulator)
  • Corrosion, water ingress, or physical damage to the BCM housing or PCB
  • Intermittent or low battery voltage/power supply to the BCM
  • Poor ground connections or high-resistance ground
  • Damaged or shorted wiring or connectors to the BCM
  • Faults on communications buses (CAN/LIN) causing BCM faults

Symptoms

  • Multiple body systems inoperative or intermittent (lights, wipers, door locks, windows)
  • Warning lamp(s) or message indicating BCM fault or multiple warnings at once
  • Keyless entry, alarm or immobilizer may be non-functional or erratic
  • Inability to communicate with BCM via diagnostic tool or repeated communication errors
  • Parasitic battery drain or vehicle not going to sleep
  • Strange behaviors: random relays energizing, flashers or interior lights acting erratically

What to check

  • Check battery state of charge and terminal condition; verify charging system voltage (13.5–14.8 V with engine running)
  • Visually inspect BCM for moisture, corrosion, or physical damage
  • Inspect BCM connector pins for corrosion, bent pins, or pushed-out terminals
  • Verify all BCM fuses and fusible links are intact and correct rating
  • Check chassis and module grounds for tightness and low resistance
  • Use a scan tool to read freeze frame, stored codes, pending codes and module status

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage at BCM power pins (V)
  • Ignition-switched supply voltage to BCM (V)
  • Ground resistance or voltage drop on BCM ground (mV)
  • CAN High / CAN Low idle voltages (~2.5 V) and differential amplitude
  • Bus error counts and last communication timestamp from scan tool
  • BCM internal uptime / boot count if available

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame and all stored/related codes from all modules. Note any communication errors and related U-codes.
  2. Inspect battery, terminals, and charging system. Verify battery voltage with key on/off and with engine running.
  3. Visually inspect BCM and connector for corrosion, moisture, damage, or loose mounting. Remove connector and inspect pins/terminals.
  4. Verify fuses and fusible links feeding the BCM. Repair any blown fuses and trace for shorts if necessary.
  5. Measure supply and ground at the BCM harness pins. Confirm proper voltages and low ground resistance under load.
  6. Scan for CAN/LIN bus activity. Use oscilloscope to check CAN high/low waveforms for noise, missing recessive/dominant states or shorts.
  7. If power/ground/communications are good, attempt a soft reset: disconnect battery or use scan tool command to reset module (follow vehicle service manual). Re-scan for code return.
  8. Check for firmware updates or known BCM software bugs from manufacturer service information. Reflash the BCM if an update or reprogramming procedure exists and is indicated.
  9. If code persists after verifying vehicle wiring, grounding and successful reflash, consider replacing the BCM. Ensure replacement module is the correct part and follow programming/initialization procedures.
  10. After repair or replacement, clear codes and verify all affected systems operate correctly. Perform extended verification for intermittent faults (drive cycle and sleep/wake tests).

Likely causes

  • Low/unstable battery voltage or poor battery terminal connection
  • Poor chassis or module ground at BCM
  • Corroded connector pins or water damage to module connector
  • BCM internal hardware or firmware fault requiring reflash or replacement
  • Short on a fused circuit feeding the BCM causing internal protection to trip

Fault status

⚠️ Status
BCM internal fault — module self-diagnostic detected an internal error. Check power, grounds, connectors, communications, and module integrity. Reprogram or replace BCM if needed.
