Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring in seat belt buckle/sensor circuit
  • Corroded or loose connector at seat harness or control module
  • Faulty seat belt buckle/sensor or latch switch
  • Pinched or damaged wires in seat tracks (movement-related)
  • Water intrusion/corrosion in connector or buckle
  • Intermittent contact from broken terminal or frayed wire

Symptoms

  • Seat belt indicator on dash may remain lit or show incorrect status
  • Passenger seat belt reminder chime may operate incorrectly
  • Possible occupant classification/airbag suppression warnings (depending on vehicle)
  • Stored B2793 fault in body/airbag module

What to check

  • Scan for codes and note freeze-frame and related codes (airbag/occupant classification)
  • Visually inspect seat area, buckle, and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, or foreign objects
  • Inspect and reseat connectors at buckle, seat harness, and control module
  • Perform wiggle test of harness while monitoring live data for belt buckle status
  • Measure continuity/resistance of buckle switch and check for proper reference voltage with key on
  • Follow OEM SRS safety procedures (battery disconnect and wait) before disconnecting or servicing restraint components

Signal parameters

  • Reference voltage: typically a 5 V reference or switched 12 V depending on manufacturer (verify with manufacturer data)
  • Buckle closed: circuit continuity / low resistance (often < 1–100 ohms depending on switch)
  • Buckle open: circuit open or high resistance (often > 10 kΩ or OL)
  • Intermittent faults: unstable or flashing buckle status in live data while manipulating connector/wiring
  • No signal: 0 V or open circuit at harness pin when expected signal present

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record DTC(s) and freeze frame data with a scan tool; check for related occupant classification or airbag codes.
  2. Visual inspection: check buckle, seat cushion, seat tracks, and connectors for damage, corrosion, water or foreign objects.
  3. With ignition ON (engine off), view live data for passenger belt buckle status. Buckle and unbuckle while observing changes; note if status is inconsistent.
  4. Disconnect battery and follow OEM SRS wait time before disconnecting/working near restraint components.
  5. Unplug the buckle connector and inspect terminals for corrosion, bent pins or loose crimps; repair or replace as required.
  6. Measure continuity/resistance of the buckle switch between harness pins with known buckled/unbuckled states (compare to manufacturer spec).
  7. With connector plugged, backprobe harness at control module or seat harness to verify reference voltage and signal voltage while changing buckle state.
  8. Perform wiggle test of wiring (seat forward/rear, recline) while monitoring live data to locate intermittent breaks.
  9. Repair wiring or replace buckle assembly if out-of-spec or intermittent. Replace/repair connectors and secure harness routing away from pinch points.
  10. Clear codes, reconnect battery, and retest. Confirm code does not return and verify correct indicator/chime operation and live data behavior.

Likely causes

  • Damaged wiring under the seat where it flexes or rubs
  • Failed buckle switch (common mechanical wear)
  • Corroded/contaminated connector at the buckle or seat harness
  • Poor ground or reference voltage to the sensor
