Causes

  • Key fob battery is dead or weak
  • Transmitter (key fob) is out of range or blocked by metal/objects
  • Faulty or damaged key fob (internal electronics or antenna)
  • Antenna/coil or wiring fault in the vehicle (door handle, B-pillar, or receiver antenna)
  • Faulty RFA/BCM/PKE module or poor module power/ground
  • Intermittent CAN or LIN communication errors between modules

Symptoms

  • No passive/keyless unlocking when approaching vehicle
  • Doors do not unlock by handle touch or proximity
  • Push-button start will not detect key / vehicle refuses to start
  • Warning or message on instrument cluster indicating transmitter not detected
  • Intermittent operation of remote functions (lock/unlock/trunk)
  • Other modules report lost communication or related PKE DTCs

What to check

  • Confirm stored DTC(s) with a capable Land Rover diagnostic tool and note freeze frame/occurrence data
  • Verify the key fob being used is the correct/registered key for the vehicle
  • Check spare key(s) to determine if fault is key-specific or vehicle-related
  • Inspect and measure key fob battery voltage (replace if below ~2.8–3.0 V)
  • Observe key fob LED (if present) and test remote buttons for RF response
  • Check for obvious damage to key fob or signs of water ingress

Signal parameters

  • Key fob battery nominal ~3.0 V (CR2032 typical) — replace if significantly lower
  • LF immobilizer coil frequency ~125 kHz (for proximity detection/transponder wake)
  • RF remote frequency commonly 315 MHz or 433 MHz (vehicle-specific)
  • Vehicle supply to RFA/BCM typically 12 V with good ground (
  • PKE detection range: normally within ~1–2 meters of vehicle handle/entry points
  • CAN/LIN communication: modules should show normal alive frames on diagnostics

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all stored DTCs and freeze frame data using a Land Rover-compatible scanner.
  2. Verify presence of the correct key: try all known/registered keys to see if any are detected.
  3. Replace or temporarily fit a known-good key fob battery and re-test detection and remote functions.
  4. Test remote functions (lock/unlock) and check for LED/response from fob; if remote works but proximity doesn't, suspect PKE antenna or LF transponder circuit.
  5. Inspect fob for physical damage and check internal antenna/contacts if comfortable doing so (workshop-safe: avoid damaging immobilizer transponder).
  6. With diagnostic tool, monitor RFA/BCM/PKE module status, live data and event logs while attempting entry/start; confirm module sees key attempts and check for communication errors.
  7. Check power, ground and fuses for the RFA/BCM/PKE module. Repair any wiring faults or poor grounds found.
  8. Inspect and test proximity/antenna loops and connectors in door handles, B-pillar and around ignition area; repair/replace broken antennas or connectors.
  9. If wiring and antennas are good, consider reprogramming/relearning the key with factory diagnostic tool (follow manufacturer procedure) — do not attempt unverified third-party methods.
  10. If problem persists after keys, batteries, antenna and wiring checks and reprogramming, consider module replacement or software update per Land Rover service information.
  11. After repairs, clear DTCs and verify normal operation over multiple cycles and ranges; re-check for reappearance of code.

Likely causes

  • Dead/weak key fob battery
  • Damaged or unprogrammed key fob
  • Antenna or wiring fault at receiver
  • Module communication or power failure

Fault status

⚠️ Status
