Causes

What to check

  • Inspect fuses and power distribution for RSE circuits
  • Visually inspect RSE connectors and harness for damage or corrosion
  • Measure supply voltage and ground at RSE connector with harness connected
  • Measure CANH/CANL voltages and differential with key ON, engine off

Signal parameters

  • CAN idle voltages: CANH ≈ 2.5 V, CANL ≈ 2.5 V (recessive)
  • CAN dominant state: CANH ~3.5 V, CANL ~1.5 V (when active)
  • Differential idle voltage: ~0 V (both ~2.5 V); dominant ≈ 2 V differential
  • Bus termination: ~60 ohms measured end-to-end (two 120Ω in parallel)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify DTC: Use an OEM-capable scan tool. Note related communication codes and freeze frame data. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce.
  2. Confirm presence: Try to communicate with RSE module. If module responds intermittently or not at all, proceed to physical checks.
  3. Power/ground check: With harness connected, measure 12 V supply and ground at the RSE connector (key ON). Repair power/ground faults first.
  4. Fuse and connector inspection: Check fuses and all related connectors for corrosion, pin damage, water intrusion, or poor mating. Repair/replace as needed.
  5. Bus integrity: With key ON, measure CANH and CANL voltages at RSE connector. Check differential signals with an oscilloscope if available. Verify ~=2.5 V idle and proper dominant levels.
  6. Termination and continuity: Measure termination resistance and perform continuity checks from RSE connector to gateway/BCM. Repair shorts/opens.
  7. Isolate module: If bus and power are good but module does not respond, disconnect RSE and check if other nodes recover (indicates module bus-off or short).
  8. Check gateway/BCM: If multiple modules are missing, inspect gateway/BCM fuses, wiring, and software; check for bus-off state or gateway faults.
  9. Software/ECU reset: If hardware is good, attempt module wake/reflash/update according to service information. Reprogram or replace module only after confirming wiring and power.
  10. Verify repair: After corrective action, clear DTCs, verify communication with RSE, and confirm system operation over a suitable drive or use-cycle to ensure NM messages are exchanged.

  • Blown fuse for rear entertainment module or accessory power circuit
  • Loose, corroded or water-damaged connector at RSE unit
  • CANH/CANL short to battery or ground or between each other
  • Open CAN wiring due to harness damage (pinched/chewed)
  • RSE internal failure (no wake, MCU fault)
  • Gateway/BCM not forwarding NM messages or bus-off condition
