Occupant Classification System Fault

Type: B — Body

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Damaged or shorted occupant classification mat (seat pad) sensors
  • Corroded, loose, or disconnected wiring or connectors under the passenger seat
  • Water/moisture intrusion into the seat mat or connector
  • Faulty occupant classification (classifier) module
  • Blown fuse or poor power/ground to the OCS module
  • Loss of communication between the OCS module and vehicle network (CAN/LIN)

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning lamp illuminated or SRS/airbag system message displayed
  • Passenger airbag status incorrect (disabled when occupied or enabled when empty)
  • Unable to complete OCS calibration or repeated calibration failures
  • Diagnostic trouble code B2810 stored in SRS/BCM memory
  • Possible limited vehicle functionality tied to airbag system safety logic

What to check

  • Read and record all stored codes, freeze frame and event data with a capable scan tool
  • Visually inspect passenger seat, underside, connectors and wiring harness for damage or moisture
  • Check related fuses and power/ground at the OCS/module connector
  • Confirm presence of classifier data on the vehicle communication bus with a scan tool
  • Check for recent seat repairs, replacement, or aftermarket covers that could affect the mat
  • Follow manufacturer SRS safety procedures before performing any resistance/continuity tests

Signal parameters

  • Sensor mat zones produce analog signals (typically 0–5 V range) or variable resistance proportional to load — compare to service specifications
  • Reference supply and ground present at the OCS module (battery voltage and chassis ground)
  • Classifier module communicates occupant classification result on vehicle data bus (CAN or LIN) — valid messages expected when system healthy
  • Scan tool should show live OCS status values (zone weights or classification states) when probed

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. With a scan tool, record B2810 plus any related codes and freeze-frame data. Note whether other SRS or communication codes are present.
  2. Inspect passenger seat, mat, wiring and connectors for physical damage, moisture, loose pins or corrosion. Repair any visible wiring issues.
  3. Verify power and ground at the OCS/module connector and check related fuses. Repair poor power/ground as needed.
  4. Using a diagnostic tool, check for live OCS data on the bus. If communication is lost, trace and repair bus wiring/connectors and related modules.
  5. With manufacturer guidance and SRS safety procedures, measure mat sensor outputs (resistance or analog voltage) on individual zones and compare to service manual or a known-good reference.
  6. If mat sensor values are out of specification or inconsistent, replace the occupant classification mat and retest.
  7. If mat tests good and wiring/power are good but fault persists, test or replace the occupant classification (classifier) module per manufacturer procedures. Programming/configuration may be required after replacement.
  8. After repairs, clear codes, perform required OCS calibration/learn procedure using the manufacturer scan tool, and verify the airbag lamp remains off and the system reports valid occupant classification.

Likely causes

  • Moisture or damage to the seat sensor mat or connector
  • Connector pin corrosion or poor ground at the seat/module
  • Faulty or failing occupant classification module
  • Communication fault on the vehicle bus preventing valid classifier data
  • Incorrect seat reassembly or aftermarket seat cover interfering with sensors

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Occupant Classification System Fault — invalid or missing occupant classification data; check mat, wiring, power/ground, and classifier module.
