Causes

  • Open or short in power supply or ground circuit to the air mix servo
  • Corroded, bent or poorly seated connector at the actuator
  • Blown fuse or faulty HVAC relay supplying the servo circuit
  • Internal failure of the actuator (potentiometer or electronics)
  • Damage to wiring harness (pinch, rodent chew, water intrusion)
  • Faulty HVAC control module or poor module ground

Symptoms

  • Inability to control cabin temperature precisely (mix door stuck)
  • HVAC blends to one temperature regardless of setting
  • Audible clicking/straining from dash area when commanding temperature
  • Stored DTC B2834 and possibly other HVAC or communication codes
  • Intermittent operation of blend door or complete lack of movement

What to check

  • Read and record all stored DTCs and freeze frame data with OEM or capable scan tool
  • Visual inspection of actuator, connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, moisture
  • Verify related fuses and relays for continuity and correct operation
  • Back-probe the actuator connector with key ON (engine OFF) and observe reference voltage and ground
  • Wiggle test wiring while monitoring signal to reproduce the fault
  • Command the actuator using a diagnostic tool to observe movement and sensor feedback

Signal parameters

  • Reference voltage to actuator sensor: approximately 5 V (expected ~4.75–5.25 V) with key ON
  • Position signal from actuator potentiometer: 0–5 V proportional to blend door position (varies by position)
  • Ground continuity: low resistance between actuator ground and chassis (near 0 Ω)
  • Potentiometer resistance: will change smoothly as door moves (typical few kΩ; should not be open or shorted)
  • Actuator motor current/pulse: may be driven by PWM — expected duty range 0–100% or frequencies in low hundreds of Hz depending on design

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner. Read and save all HVAC and communication fault codes and freeze frame data.
  2. Perform a visual inspection: remove lower dash panels as required to access the air mix servo and harness. Look for corrosion, bent pins, water intrusion, damage or signs of prior repair.
  3. Check fuses/relays: verify continuity and correct supply to HVAC module/actuator circuits.
  4. With key ON (engine OFF), back-probe the actuator connector: verify reference voltage (~5 V), ground continuity and position signal presence. Note values before moving to next step.
  5. Command the actuator through the scan tool to cycle the blend door while observing the position signal. The signal voltage should change smoothly with movement. If no change, note whether motor is receiving power or PWM.
  6. Wiggle test wiring and connectors while monitoring signal to check for intermittent opens/shorts. Repair any damaged wiring or connectors.
  7. If reference voltage or ground is missing, trace wiring back to HVAC control module and check module power/grounds and related connectors/fuses.
  8. If wiring and module outputs are correct but sensor signal is incorrect or unstable, remove the actuator and bench-test the potentiometer/motor per manufacturer procedure. Replace actuator if internal sensor/electronics are faulty.
  9. After repair, clear codes, perform actuator relearn/calibration if required, and confirm proper operation and that the code does not return.
  10. If fault persists after replacing actuator and repairing wiring, inspect/replace HVAC control module or perform module software update per manufacturer guidance.

Likely causes

  • Failed actuator internal sensor/electronics (most common)
  • Open/short in power or ground conductor to actuator
  • Corroded/loose connector at the actuator
  • Blown fuse or interrupted power feed to HVAC module/actuator
  • HVAC control module output or internal fault
