Causes

  • Damaged or chafed wiring contacting chassis ground
  • Corroded or damaged connector at the pump
  • Internal short inside the pump motor (armature/brushes)
  • Failed pump relay or fuse (repeated failures may indicate short)
  • Control module driver fault
  • Water intrusion or contamination in connector or motor

Symptoms

  • Pump does not run or runs intermittently
  • Blown fuse or repeated fuse failures on the pump circuit
  • Relevant system loss of function (depending on pump: fuel, A/C, coolant, washer, etc.)
  • Battery drain or clicking relays when pump is commanded
  • DTC B2872 stored and possibly lamp or system warning

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame data and related stored codes
  • Visual inspection of pump, connector, and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, or water ingress
  • Check fuses and relays for the pump circuit
  • Disconnect pump connector and see if code clears or changes
  • Measure voltage at pump connector with the circuit commanded ON
  • Measure resistance between pump power/drive wire and ground (with power removed)

Signal parameters

  • Nominal supply voltage at pump connector when ON: ~12 V (vehicle battery voltage)
  • Motor coil resistance: typically low (ohms); consult vehicle-specific spec
  • Short-to-ground resistance: near 0 Ω between feed/drive wire and chassis ground when short present
  • Expected current draw: depends on pump type (commonly 1–10 A for small motors; check spec)
  • Control module output: may be steady 12 V or PWM drive (measure duty cycle/frequency with scope)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve codes and freeze-frame, and identify which pump (refer to vehicle service manual).
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the pump, harness, and connector for damage, corrosion, or water.
  3. With ignition OFF, disconnect the pump connector. Check resistance between the pump feed/drive pin and chassis ground. A very low resistance indicates a short to ground.
  4. Disconnect the pump and clear the code. If code does not return with pump disconnected, suspect the motor or pump harness as the cause.
  5. Inspect/repair visible wiring damage. If none found, perform a continuity check from the pump connector pin back to the control module/relay to locate a short.
  6. Bench-test the pump by applying fused 12 V directly to the pump motor ground and power pins (observe current draw and that motor runs smoothly). High current or no rotation suggests internal motor fault.
  7. If pump bench-test is good and no short is found in harness, test the control module/driver output with a scope or meter for correct drive behavior (watch for constant low resistance indicating a shorted driver transistor).
  8. Repair or replace damaged wiring, connector, or pump as indicated. Replace control module only after confirming external circuit is good and driver is faulty.
  9. After repair, clear codes and perform functional test/repeat cycles to verify the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Wire insulation rubbed through where harness contacts metal, creating a direct ground
  • Pump motor internal winding short to motor housing
  • Connector pins corroded/bridged by moisture or debris
  • Shorted output transistor inside the control module
