Causes

  • Blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker
  • Open or broken wiring (cut, chafed, or broken conductor)
  • Disconnected, corroded or damaged connector terminals
  • Faulty pump motor with open windings
  • Poor or missing ground connection
  • Faulty body/control module output or internal connector fault

Symptoms

  • Pump does not run when commanded
  • Relevant system inoperative (e.g., washer/heater/circulation depending on vehicle)
  • Warning or fault indicator illuminated for related system
  • DTC B2874 stored in body/control module memory
  • No audible sound from pump when activated

What to check

  • Visually inspect wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, or disconnection at the pump and fuse/relay box
  • Check related fuses and relays for continuity and correct operation
  • Attempt to activate pump while observing for operation or voltage at the pump connector
  • Measure connector pin-to-pin continuity between module and pump harness
  • Check ground continuity from pump chassis/ground terminal to vehicle ground
  • Scan module for additional related codes and freeze/frame data

Signal parameters

  • Expected supply when commanded: battery voltage (~11–14 V) at pump positive terminal while the module switches it on
  • Expected motor winding resistance: low (typically single to tens of ohms) — an open line reads infinite/OL
  • Control-side output: module should switch to ground or supply depending on circuit design when active
  • No continuity (open) between motor terminals or between motor and module indicates open line

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all stored codes and freeze data with a scan tool; note any related codes
  2. Perform a visual inspection of wiring, connectors, and fuse/relay for obvious damage or corrosion
  3. Check the fuse(s) and relay(s) for the pump circuit; replace if blown/faulty and retest
  4. With vehicle ignition on, command the pump on (use scan tool or switch) and back-probe the pump connector: verify battery voltage at feed terminal when commanded and a proper return/ground
  5. If no voltage at connector, trace back harness to the control module measuring for voltage and continuity; repair any open segments
  6. If voltage is present but pump does not run, disconnect pump and measure motor winding resistance; replace pump if winding is open or out of spec
  7. If wiring and pump test good but no module output, inspect module connector and wiring to module; consider module fault and consult manufacturer repair information before replacement
  8. After repairs, clear codes and perform functional test to confirm pump operates and code does not return

Likely causes

  • Corroded/disconnected connector at pump or fuse/relay box
  • Blown fuse protecting the pump circuit
  • Broken wire between module and pump (wear, chafe, connector end)
  • Failed pump motor winding (open circuit)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Control module detected an open circuit in the pump motor line. The pump did not receive/return the expected electrical signal and will not operate until the open circuit is located and repaired.
