Causes

  • Damaged or disconnected PKE antenna
  • Corroded or broken connector(s) at the antenna or control module
  • Power supply or ground fault to the antenna (blown fuse, open circuit)
  • Short or open in antenna coaxial wiring or harness
  • Faulty PKE antenna module or body control module (BCM)
  • Water intrusion or physical damage to antenna assembly

Symptoms

  • Keyless entry passive unlock/lock does not work or only works at very close range
  • Intermittent or no response from key fob when near vehicle
  • Vehicle may not detect the key for passive start/function
  • One or more door lock/unlock operations fail or are inconsistent
  • Related warning/info message on instrument cluster or message center

What to check

  • Read stored codes and freeze frame with a diagnostic scanner; record related B- and U- codes
  • Check for additional body/BCM or immobilizer codes that may be related
  • Visually inspect antenna assembly, connectors, and routing for damage, corrosion, water intrusion, or pinched wiring
  • Check fuses and relays supplying PKE/BCM circuits
  • Verify key fob battery voltage and operation with spare key/fob if available
  • Wiggle-test connectors and wiring while observing live data / indicator behavior for intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage to antenna: nominal vehicle battery voltage (~12 V) present when system awake
  • Ground continuity between antenna and chassis/BCM ground
  • Data/communication: CAN/LIN or dedicated data line may be present—verify module sees antenna presence messages
  • RF: antenna should receive/transmit low-power RF at manufacturer frequency (check with RF tester or scope where available)
  • Impedance/continuity: antenna feed should not be open or shorted to chassis (check continuity, expect low ohm continuity to module and no shorts to ground)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and document all DTCs and freeze frame data; clear codes and re-run to confirm repeatability.
  2. Verify key fob operation and try spare fob to rule out key-side issue.
  3. Perform visual inspection of antenna(s), connectors, and harness routing for corrosion, water damage, chafing, or physical damage.
  4. Check fuses and power supply to the antenna/BCM; verify battery voltage at the antenna connector with ignition in required state.
  5. Verify ground(s) for proper connection and low resistance to chassis battery negative.
  6. Measure continuity and resistance of antenna feed cable between antenna and BCM; check for opens or shorts to chassis.
  7. If available, monitor antenna input or PKE-related parameters with a scan tool while operating a key fob near each antenna to observe presence/strength; use an RF detector/oscilloscope for RF presence if necessary.
  8. Wiggle harnesses/connectors while monitoring live data to identify intermittent wiring issues.
  9. If wiring and power/ground check good, swap with known-good antenna/module (if possible) or temporarily move antenna to confirm module/antenna failure.
  10. Replace defective antenna assembly, repair wiring/connector faults, or replace BCM/module as supported by further testing. After repairs, clear codes and perform verification: confirm consistent passive keyless operation and that the B2942 code does not return.

  • Open or shorted antenna feed/wiring from impact or chafing
  • Failed antenna assembly (internal component failure)
  • Blown/loose fuse or bad ground affecting antenna power or reference
