Causes

  • Multimedia (infotainment) module not powered or in sleep mode
  • Open or short in CAN high/low wiring between multimedia module and body network
  • Poor or corroded connector(s) at the multimedia unit, BCM, or junctions
  • CAN bus termination missing or incorrect resistance
  • High bus error rate or bus-off condition on the CAN network
  • Software/firmware bug or configuration mismatch in multimedia or BCM

Symptoms

  • Clock/time on instrument cluster or infotainment screen not updating or blank
  • Warning or message about multimedia communication on the cluster
  • Related features tied to clock (scheduled events, navigation time) incorrect
  • Intermittent or permanent loss of multimedia functions
  • Multiple communication-related DTCs present

What to check

  • Read and record all stored and pending DTCs and freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool
  • Check fuses and power/ground at the multimedia module and BCM
  • Visually inspect connectors and harnesses for damage, corrosion or poor seating
  • Measure CAN bus termination resistance (~60 ohm across CAN H and CAN L with ignition off) or 120 ohm depending on network topology
  • Use a scan tool to confirm whether the multimedia module is communicating on the network
  • Check for other modules reporting CAN errors (bus-off) or high error counts

Signal parameters

  • Expected periodic clock/multimedia CAN message: typically 1 Hz (once per second) or periodic heartbeat — confirm exact interval from OEM docs
  • CAN bus idle voltages: approx. CAN_H 2.5 V, CAN_L 2.5 V (recessive); differential amplitude ~2.5–3.5 V when dominant
  • Normal high-speed CAN bit rate for body/infotainment networks: commonly 500 kbps or 250 kbps (verify for model)
  • Expected message ID for clock/time: manufacturer-specific — verify in wiring/service manual or CAN database
  • Termination resistance: approx. 60 ohm measured across CAN_H and CAN_L (two 120 ohm in parallel) depending on vehicle

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Capture scan-tool data: record B295700 plus any related U-/B-codes, note conditions (ignition state, engine off/on).
  2. Verify multimedia module power and grounds: check fuses, ignition-switched supply, and chassis ground at the unit.
  3. Inspect and reseat connectors at the multimedia unit, BCM and any intermediate gateways. Check for corrosion or bent pins.
  4. Confirm the multimedia module appears on the network using a scan tool or module list. If it is absent, focus on power, grounds and local wiring.
  5. Measure CAN bus wiring continuity between multimedia unit and nearest gateway/BCM. Look for opens, high resistance, or shorts to battery/ground.
  6. Check termination resistance with ignition off. If termination is incorrect, isolate wiring segments to find missing/extra resistor.
  7. Use an oscilloscope or CAN analyzer to view CAN_H and CAN_L while attempting communication. Look for proper differential signals, noise, or bus-off events.
  8. If bus messages are present but clock message is missing, check for software level issues: confirm module software versions and update per OEM service information.
  9. Clear codes and perform a road/ignition cycle to see if the code returns. If intermittent, try to reproduce under the same conditions reported.
  10. If wiring, power and termination are good but message still missing, consider replacing or bench-testing the multimedia module (or BCM/gateway) per OEM procedures.
  11. After repair or module replacement, reprogram/configure modules if required and verify normal operation and no recurrence of the code.

Likely causes

  • Loose or corroded connector at the infotainment unit or BCM
  • Multimedia unit not powering up due to fuse or ignition supply fault
  • Intermittent CAN wiring (broken strand, pinched harness) causing message loss
  • CAN bus termination problem (open or extra resistor)
  • Module software needing reflash or module in a fault state

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Multimedia CAN Clock message timeout—infotainment clock data was not received on the vehicle CAN network within the expected timeout window.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0 - 3.0 hours
