Causes

  • Loss of power or poor battery connection to the BCM
  • Poor ground at BCM or related ground strap
  • Damaged, corroded, or loose BCM connector(s)
  • Open/short or high resistance in CAN or LIN bus wiring
  • Bus termination fault (missing/shorted terminator resistor)
  • Faulty BCM hardware or internal software failure

Symptoms

  • No communication with BCM using a scan tool or intermittent connection
  • Multiple body electrical functions inoperative or intermittent (locks, lights, wipers, windows, convenience features)
  • Warning or malfunction indicator lamp(s) for body systems
  • Remote/keyless entry and security system faults
  • Possible parasitic battery drain or no-crank condition if BCM controls starter enable
  • Other control modules reporting lost-communication DTCs

What to check

  • Verify code is current (not pending) and capture freeze frame/scan tool live data
  • Check battery voltage (should be 12–14.5 V with engine off/on as appropriate)
  • Inspect BCM connectors for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture; reseat connectors
  • Check fuses and relays supplying the BCM
  • Scan network for other U-/B-codes that identify a bus-wide problem
  • Perform wiggle test on wiring harness while monitoring comms

Signal parameters

  • Battery/power feed to BCM: nominal 11–14.5 V (engine off/idle depending on condition)
  • BCM ground: near 0 V; low resistance to chassis ground (under 0.1–0.5 Ω)
  • CAN bus idle voltages: CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V (nominal), CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V (nominal); dominant bits ~CAN_H 3.5 V / CAN_L 1.5 V
  • LIN bus idle: pulled high near battery voltage (~11–14 V) and driven low to ~0 V for dominant
  • Bus differential voltage: ~0 V at idle, expected differential pulses when traffic present

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm the DTC: use a capable scan tool to read and record B3181 and any related codes or freeze-frame data.
  2. Check vehicle battery and charging system; ensure stable supply voltage during diagnostics.
  3. Visually inspect BCM area: connectors, mounting, moisture, corrosion, rodent damage or recent repairs.
  4. Verify fuses/relays for BCM power circuits; replace if suspect and re-test communications.
  5. With key ON, use the scan tool to attempt communication. If no communication, measure power and ground at the BCM connector pins.
  6. Probe CAN (or LIN) bus lines at the BCM: confirm idle voltages and look for expected traffic on a scope or scan tool oscilloscope function.
  7. If bus voltages are abnormal, trace wiring for shorts to battery/chassis or opens; disconnect non-original accessories and repeat tests.
  8. Check for bus termination resistors (≈60 Ω total between CAN_H and CAN_L) and replace/repair if failed.
  9. If wiring and power/ground are good and bus traffic present but BCM still not responding, check for software updates and perform reflash/reprogram if recommended by manufacturer.
  10. If reprogramming fails or BCM shows internal faults, consider replacement and proper programming/initialization. After repair, clear codes and perform full system test and road test.

Likely causes

  • Weak battery/poor power or ground to BCM
  • CAN or LIN wiring open, shorted, or high resistance
  • Corroded/loose connector at BCM
  • Faulty BCM (internal failure)
  • Aftermarket accessory interfering with bus traffic

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored when the BCM fails internal communication checks or does not respond on the vehicle network. May be intermittent or persistent. Investigation should start with power/ground, connectors, and bus integrity before assuming module replacement.
