Keyless Entry Antenna Circuit Short to Ground

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Damaged or chafed antenna wiring contacting chassis ground
  • Shorted antenna coil or internal failure of the antenna unit
  • Corroded or loose connector or terminal causing unintended grounding
  • Water intrusion or contamination at antenna or connector
  • Faulty Body Control Module (BCM) or keyless entry/antenna module (rare)
  • Aftermarket alarm/remote-installation wiring incorrectly tied to the antenna circuit

Symptoms

  • Passive keyless entry not detecting the key/fob (no passive unlock)
  • Remote lock/unlock or remote start may not work
  • Intermittent or complete loss of door unlock when approaching vehicle
  • Security/immobilizer warning lamp may be illuminated or flashing
  • Stored diagnostic trouble code(s) and possibly related BCM/immobilizer faults

What to check

  • Use a scan tool to confirm B3183 and note any related codes or freeze-frame data
  • Visually inspect antenna(s), wiring harness routing, and connectors for damage, corrosion, or water intrusion
  • Check for aftermarket equipment or recent service in the dash, doors, or around antenna locations
  • Disconnect the antenna connector(s) and check for continuity to ground on the signal conductor
  • Inspect connector terminals for pushed-out pins, bent pins, or corrosion
  • Wiggle the harness while observing live data or DTCs to reproduce intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Antenna supply voltage present at connector with ignition ON (approx. vehicle battery voltage at module feed)
  • Signal conductor should NOT show continuity to chassis ground (open circuit or high resistance when antenna disconnected)
  • Antenna coil resistance should match manufacturer specification (measured with ohmmeter)
  • Antenna operates on LF carrier (typ. ~125 kHz) — verify signal presence with appropriate scope or LF diagnostic tool if available

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record DTC(s) and freeze-frame data with a scan tool; check for related BCM/immobilizer codes.
  2. Visually inspect antenna location(s), harness routing, grommets, and connectors for damage, corrosion, water, or pinched wires.
  3. Disconnect battery negative lead if required by manufacturer before probing connectors in-vehicle.
  4. Disconnect the antenna connector. With a multimeter, measure resistance/continuity from the antenna signal wire to chassis ground — if near zero, a short to ground exists in the wiring or antenna.
  5. With connector unplugged, measure antenna coil resistance across its terminals and compare to spec. If coil is shorted internally, replace antenna unit.
  6. If antenna checks healthy, perform a back-probe of the harness toward the module to locate where the circuit becomes shorted. Isolate sections by disconnecting intermediate connectors until short disappears.
  7. Inspect and repair wiring: replace damaged sections, repair corroded terminals, and reseal connectors. Replace antenna assembly if internally defective.
  8. If wiring and antenna are good, check BCM/antenna module supply and ground circuits and verify correct operation; replace module only after wiring and antenna are confirmed good.
  9. Clear codes, test operation (passive entry, remote) and road/test as needed. Re-scan for reappearance of B3183.

Likely causes

  • Chafed wiring harness where it passes through a pinch point or grommet and is contacting the body
  • Connector pins corroded or pushed out, grounding the signal line
  • Antenna housing damaged by impact or moisture causing internal short
  • Recent aftermarket electronic installation (alarm, remote start) tied into antenna/immobilizer wiring

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Keyless entry antenna circuit: short to ground detected. Antenna or wiring likely grounded; keyless entry/immo detection may be inoperative.
