Causes

  • Blown or high-resistance fuse in the module power feed
  • Faulty power/ignition relay or control circuit
  • Weak or discharged battery or poor charging system (alternator) output
  • Corroded, damaged or loose connector or wiring to the module (short to ground or high resistance)
  • Intermittent ground connection at the module or chassis ground
  • Parasitic load or additional aftermarket devices on the same circuit

Symptoms

  • Active aerodynamic components (spoilers, flaps) do not deploy or retract
  • Control module warning lamp or service message displayed
  • Intermittent operation of aerodynamic features
  • DTC B3A31 stored in the body/control module
  • Possible reduced vehicle performance mode if aero functions are required

What to check

  • Read and record all stored codes and freeze-frame data with a scan tool; check for related codes (CAN bus, battery/charging)
  • Measure battery open-circuit voltage and voltage with ignition ON (should normally be ~12–14.5 V with engine running)
  • Inspect fuses and relays related to Aerodynamic Module D; test or substitute known-good relay if suspect
  • Visually inspect module connector and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, exposed wires, or poor pin contact
  • Backprobe the module Power Mode supply pin and ground with ignition ON; observe steady voltage and look for drops under load
  • Check module ground integrity and continuity to chassis ground

Signal parameters

  • Expected supply voltage at module Power Mode pin with ignition ON: approx. 11.5–14.5 V (varies by vehicle)
  • Voltage considered low/threshold trigger: typically below ~9–10 V (vehicle-specific)
  • Key OFF: near 0 V on switched power circuits; Key ON/Accessory: supply should return to battery voltage range
  • Voltage during starter cranking may drop but should recover above threshold when engine runs

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool, retrieve B3A31 and any related codes; note ignition/engine state and freeze-frame data.
  2. Verify battery state-of-charge and charging system. Recharge or load-test battery if below specification.
  3. Inspect fuses and related relays for the Active Aerodynamic Feature module; replace any blown fuse and retest.
  4. With ignition ON, backprobe the module Power Mode supply terminal and measure voltage and continuity to battery positive. Look for stable voltage in the expected range.
  5. Wiggle the wiring harness and connectors while monitoring voltage for intermittent drops; repair or replace damaged wiring or connectors.
  6. Verify module ground(s) with an ohmmeter; clean and tighten ground connections if resistance is high.
  7. If wiring, fuses, relays, battery and grounds test good but low voltage persists at the module, consider module internal fault—check for technical service bulletins (TSBs) and perform module reflash/reprogram if available.
  8. After repairs, clear codes, operate the aerodynamic features through the diagnostic tool or normal function cycles, and confirm code does not return. Monitor voltage during operation.

  • Blown fuse or failed power relay feeding Active Aerodynamic Control Module D
  • Damaged harness or corroded connector pin causing voltage drop to the module
  • Low battery voltage/charging system problem causing voltage to fall below the module threshold
  • Failed module internal regulator or power transistor
